Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I recently bought a refurbished 2wire 2700hg router. When i run the setup wizard i am prompted to enter a "system password". I don't know what this is! When i click the "i forgot my password" link i am told i can obtain a temporary password from tech support. The only number i can find for tech support is in the US and as i am from the UK i don't fancy running up a huge phone bill trying to sort out this problem. Is there a UK based tech support centre I can call or is there another way I can reset the system password without using a temporary password?

How can i have the password bios of laptop dell E6420

f you are running Dell servers, it is recommended to enable BIOS password. This is will prevent accidental changes done to Dell BIOS settings by others who get physical access to the server.

You can setup two different types of passwords in Dell BIOS:

System Password: This will be prompted before the system can boot up, and load the operating system.
Setup password: The system will prompt for this password only when you are trying to access the BIOS settings.

Depending on your situation, it might be a good idea to enable both the system and setup password at the BIOS level. I recommend that you at least enable BIOS password.
Press F2 for System Setup

When the Dell server is booting up, press F2 to start system setup, from where you can change Dell BIOS settings.

BIOS System Security

From the Dell BIOS main menu, scroll down to "System Security" and press enter.

Password Not Enabled

From here, you can see that both the System and Setup password is not enabled by default.

Enable System Password (and Setup Password)

Scroll to "System Password" and press enter, which will prompt you to enter the password that you like to set for the system. Please understand that if you set this password, you have to enter this password everytime you start the system. Do the same thing for Setup Password.

Don't forget this bios password. If you forget, then you have go through the painful process of resetting the Dell BIOS password.
Password is Enabled

Once you've enabled both the password, from the "System Security" menu, you'll see that that both system and setup password is enabled as shown below.

password is set

System Password Prompt (During Startup)

From now-onwards, anytime you start the system, it will not load the operating system, unless you specify the system password as shown below.

Setup Password Prompt (To Access BIOS)

If you press F2, to get to the BIOS, it will prompt for the setup password as shown below. If you don't enter a valid password here, you cannot access the Dell BIOS settings anymore.

Restart your computer repeatedly tapping the f8 key to enter safe mode while the screen is black once in safe mode where the only things working will be your keyboard and mouse allowing you to attempt to repair your computer

Windows Advanced Options Menu

Please select an option:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode

Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice

select safe mode with command prompt

Click start run type cmd press Enter

black screen should open DOS mode

this will vary depending on your operating system

type in net user username

For eg. If you want to change administrator password , type net user Administrator

It will prompt you to enter the new password.

Enter the new password and the password is changed

if this fails you will need to

Select safe mode with networking to download

you could download all of these or just one save them to a usb drive for later use if one fails to remove the password

Start-up and shut down problems, When starting up it says, press f1 to continue, f2 to run set-up.... F1 works but I am getting tired of doing this. Now when the computer starts, it stops at...

Hi names Rui,

For your problem the computer may display a prompt to press F1/F2 or any other key to enter setup each time the computer boots as a reminder on how to enter CMOS. However, if the computer asks to press F1/F2 (or another key) to enter setup and does not continue, this may be caused by any of the below reasons.

  1. New hardware has been recently installed.
  2. Error or confliction with settings in CMOS.
  3. CMOS battery is bad or failing.
Solution:

New hardware has been recently installed

If new hardware has been recently installed into the computer, it is likely that you are receiving the prompt "Press F1 or F2 to enter setup" because CMOS needs to verify that the new detected hardware is properly being setup in CMOS. Enter CMOS setup and save the settings and exit. If you continue to get errors continue to the next step.

Error or confliction with settings in CMOS

If no new hardware has been added or you continue to get this prompt verify no error or conflictions exist in CMOS. Press the key to enter setup and verify that all settings are correct.

If your time and date are not set correctly, your battery is more than likely bad. Try setting the correct time and date, save the settings and then reboot. If after turning off the computer the time and date get reset again replace the battery.

If the time and date are correct and everything else appears to be correct try resetting the CMOS values to the defaults.

CMOS battery is bad or failing

If you continue to receive the prompt to enter setup each time the computer boots up and you have attempted to follow the above suggestions, your CMOS battery is bad. We recommended that the CMOS battery be replaced.

hope this will help you.

How do i change my router password

Please just follow the steps to change your router's password.

1. Open your Internet browser, type the address of the router into the URL address bar, and open it. The address is typically in the form of 192.168.X.X. This is the local network address.

2. Enter the account name and password to open the router setup utility.

3. Navigate through the setup utility until you find the screen that will let you change the password. You will need to enter the old password to change it.

4. Decide on a new password that has good security to a hacker. The best password is more than 8 characters and uses both lower case and upper case letters and numbers. Some will allow you to use special characters also. Do not make the password anything that can be found in a dictionary or any date of significance.

5. Enter the old password in the change password page of the router. When prompted then enter the new password. You will be asked to enter it twice to confirm that the correct password is entered.

6. Immediately, record the new password in some secure location that you can find if you forget it.

7. Confirm the password change on the router page and log off the router. To check the information and that the router has been setup correctly with the new password, open the router address in the browser again and log in with the new information. If you are able to log in, you have successfully changed the password.

Thanks.
Have a great day.

CTRL + F11 Doesnt work on my Dell?

Do you get a prompt to press CTRL F11 at startup?
What prompts do you get? You should be prompted to enter setup or hit F12 (I think) for boot options. If you are not prompted to enter system recovery, then you might be out of luck.
If the computer was refurbished, it is possible that the previous owner reformatted the drive and wiped out the recovery partition.

The question I would ask is why are you trying to do a system recovery?
Can't you just uninstall the stuff you don't want?

Windows XP is not the problem. It may be that the CD you have is unreadable in some way or is conflicting with another application. However, you don't actually need to use the CD to configure your router. If you can connect the ethernet cable between your computer and the ports labled LAN (or they may just be numbered 1 - 4), you can set up the router using the web-based utility. With the computer connected to the router, open a web browser (like Internet Explorer) and type http://192.168.1.1 in the address bar and press enter (if that doesn't work try 192.168.0.1). If you are asked for a password, leave the user name blank and try "admin" (no quotes) for the password (or "password"). This should get you into the web-based setup utility. From there you can run set-up wizards witin the uiltity.

Linksys also has free technical support for at least the first 90 days. They should be able to assist you with using the web utility to configure your wireless or possibly replace your CD or point you to a download for the software.
