Since your printer has no display and the buttons in order to make all the network settings, you have to use the Brother installer application on the CD-ROM which is provided with the printer. There is also another (manual) solution but it's not so easy. Anyway try with the cd-rom for the easiest way. At this link you will find the pdf file with installation details for network connections, take a look at page 15 (or 22 counting with the pdf reader).

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply.

How to connect hp pavilion to brother mfc9560cdw without router

This model Bother printer has a 10baseT LAN connection and can be connected to your LAN network and to your HP laptop via the wireless router. Connect a LAN cable from the printer to the wireless router.
To print from your HP laptop, check the IP address range your wireless router issues to your wireless network, it maybe 192.168.1.*** then configure the brother printer with a fixed IP address with the same IP address range but higher address eg. 192.168.1.10 so it does not clash with any other IP addresses.
Next install the Brother printer driver normally.
Then configure the Brother printer Properties.
Click Start - Printers and faxes - right click on the Brother printer - click Properties - Port tab - click Add Port - Standard TCP/IP port -
Port Name eg. 192.168.1.10
Printer name eg Brother
Click OK
Then do a TEST print if it does not work then the IP address is probably incorrect.

Brother 8890DW Wireless Configuration Difficulties. I want to configure the above printer through a wireless acess point connected to a router via ethernet. The router sees the printer, yet the computers...

I don't have a solution, but I have a similar problem with a new Brother 8690DW MFC machine. Out of the box - I can't establish wireless connection. Brother "tech support" (!) insists I am typing in the WEP key incorrectly... doesn't matter to them that I've configured literally hundreds of devices with encryption keys before.

I'm about ready to return this machine and get another. Yet, I suspect that the Brother setup instructions are missing something I need to do - I can't figure out what, though, and have been through every relevant setting I can find.

Configuration using a wireless computer.
  1. If your computer has wireless capability, you will need to change the wireless settings of your computer to Ad-hoc mode so you can directly connect and configure the printer.
  2. Wireless network terms and concepts
When you configure the wireless network printer, you must ensure that your wireless network printer is
configured to match the settings of the existing wireless network. This section provides some of the main
terms and concepts of these settings, which may be helpful when you configure the wireless network printer.
SSID (Service Set Identifier) and channels
You need to configure the SSID and a channel to specify the wireless network you want to connect to.
    SSID
Each wireless network has its own unique network name and it is technically referred to as SSID or ESSID
(Extended Service Set Identifier). The SSID is a 32-byte or less value and is assigned to the access point.
The wireless network devices you want to associate to the wireless network should match the access point.
The access point and wireless network devices regularly send wireless packets (referred to as a beacon)
which has the SSID information. When your wireless network device receives a beacon, you can identify the
wireless network that is close enough for the radio waves to reach your device.
    Channels
Wireless networks use channels. Each wireless channel is on a different frequency. There are up to 14 different channels that can be used when using a wireless network. However, in many countries the number of channels available are restricted. For further information, see Ethernet wireless network on page 165.
Authentication and encryption Most wireless networks use some kind of security settings. These security settings define the authentication (how the device identifies itself to the network) and encryption (how the data is encrypted as it is sent on the
network). If you do not correctly specify these options when you are configuring your Brother wireless device, it will not be able to connect to the wireless network. Therefore care must be taken when configuring these options. Please refer to the information below to see which authentication and encryption methods your Brother wireless device supports.
    Authentication methods
The Brother printer supports the following methods:
    • Open system
Wireless devices are allowed access the network without any authentication.
    • Shared key
A secret pre-determined key is shared by all devices that will access the wireless network.
The Brother printer uses the WEP keys as the pre-determined key.
  3. I will advise you download this network manual and follow the instructions on chapters 3 and 4.

Printing remotely from laptop -- can I?

I assume it's a Brother printer not your brother's printer right? I have an HP and it's a wireless printer which is accessible through my network, you have to install the printer driver and software on to the other laptop that is connected wirelessly to your network.

Hl-2170w brother is offline

I just realized what my problem was with this same situation..."Off line". Do the following:

1. Reset the printer to factory default settings: turn off, turn on holding down blue button; after all LEDs light-up release button; All LEDs with go out then flash once.
2. Hook up the printer to an open port on your wireless HUB.
3. Install Brother software (note: go to programs/brother HL-2170 and select remove software prior to reinstalling)
4. Here is the catch: MAKE sure to select the correct encryption code. I was selecting TKIP instead of AES and two things happened...1) the computer did not pick up the printer on the network scan, and 2) the printer will remain off-line.

Once i selected AES, the computer found the printer on the network and viola' no more problems.

I then added my wireless laptop: installed drivers only, the programs scanned and found the printer on the wireless network and that was it. Now both computers are wireless!

HOPE THIS HELPS!!!

Server or not

I think you should go with the one that has a built-in print server. The main reason is that the build-in print server will allow you to view the status of the printer such as the ink level, page count and paper jam location. It will also allow you to configure the printer remotely with a userfriendly interface.

An external print server will only enable you to print through the network and not configure the printer.

According to Brother's web site, the price difference between the 2140 and the 2170 is about $30. An external print server usualy cost more than that.

Hope this helps.

Wireless Setup

well..I suppose we should determine that you have your small office/business network set up first, right? it's under network connections. If it's not there, then your printer will stay invisible. Is this a replacement or new install?
