If it is Sony DCR-HC30E camcorder then problem is ccd imager chip failure that is why it does not show live view, ccd imager chip will be replaced to fix the issue of blank screen.
It is job of qualified camera tech to replace ccd imaer chip because camera will take apart, let me know if you want to know part nuber of required ccd imager chip.

worthwhile getting it repaired or should I cut my losses and start to
look a new 'camcorder'?

CCD Imager part number is as follows:
875321549 ICX441NKF-13 (CCD IMAGER)(HC30E)
Above said part would cost you around $88 plus labor. New camcorder sounds better option.

The image will not appear simultaneously on the LCD
monitor and the viewfinder. It will appear in the
viewfinder when the LCD monitor is in the lock position,
and it will appear on the LCD monitor when fully
extended.
