I am having the same problem. My BlackBerry ball will not select, but it is able to track. This problem seems to be circumvented, however, whenever it comes to typing messages, I cannot select letters or words.

i have the same problem and now my problem is gotten worse.. the selected icons are selecting by themselves.. for example.. when i am talking with my fren on phone.. it selects the menu button and it automatically press mute or do the same procedure to unmute..

Same problem. I asked a few friends that have them and 2 said they had the same issue. Its the software, unless you broke it

  • telinal Jul 26, 2008

Similar problem: when I press the trackball button, it actualy behaves as though I am pressing the "Q" key. I even tried by removing the trackball and pressing with a "Q" tip to emulate the ball pressing down, and it does the same thing, it seems very odd, but I am afraid it is not a hardware problem...  I am wondering if the trackball can loose calibration? Can it be recalibrated?

8330 Sprint Curve, keyboard spontaneously stopped working.  Have tried battery pull.  Have tried battery pull and waiting for 30 seconds.  Have tried alt, right shift delete.  Nothing.  The track ball can highlight items, but not reset them.

This happened once before, and then fixed it's self randomly.

    What a bunch of ********.

Get a sheet of paper or a pad of paper, put your cell upside down so the rollerball is touching the paper... Rub the phone on the paper quite vigerously. This has been a problem for me with many pearls - there is some dust / dirt lodged under the ball which stops it behaving the way it should. You may need to do this in all directions.

Hey! this is actually a flaw with the software on the newer blackberrys. Mine did the same thing, one day it was working fine in the morning, but in the afternoon, nothing. Would only show its display after plugging it in to a charger or usb cable, the trackball would scroll on the home screen, but if i wanted to click in on anything, forget it! none of the buttons worked, the entire keyboard? rendered useless. Take it in to your local wireless provider and have them take a look at it. My provider (Sprint) went ahead and ordered me a new one since it was still under warranty.

The metal ring and the actual ball can be removed but be careful and pick the ring up straight so you do not break any prongs from the ring, after removing them you will see a yellow piece of tape pull that up and clean under the clicker under the tape, put tape back on the center of clicker and place track ball back in, than put silver ring back in with three legs to the bottom hole at top...Hope this helps if not you can purchase new track balls at wirelessparts.com

The only way to fully get it up and running again is remove the trackball and replace the switch membrane underneath. If you want somebody else to do it for you, goto Blackberry Button Repair. If you want to do it yourself, here is a Blackberry Repair Guide that shows how, the part is available on Ebay.

“call” , “call end”, “A” keys and trackball select on my bb 9700 will not work! would this be a moisture problem? Will shift-alt-delete solve this?

@telinal : Same problem happened to me and after I remove the trackball and clean it inside (with an earpad) it started behaving as normal

BB Pearl's trackball scrolls but it will not

There is probably some corrosion underneith the center dome cover on the select button. It is held on by some tape. Simply remove the track ball then remove the center select button dome and clean/scrap both sides with a small screwdriver and reinstall. You will probably have to retape it down. This should get you up and running in no time.

My BB Pearl 8130 goes into camera mode and takes pictures by itself. Also the roller ball does not click anymore so i cannot select anything on any of the menues. HELP!!!

This might be because of Hardware issue you need to walk into the service center to get it repair.
For your track ball:-
1) Go to menu
2) Select Option's
3) Select screen and key board
4) Make Horizantal and vertical sensitivity to 100, Still not working you need to walk into the service center.

My blackberry 8100 can't open

If you are having problems with your Blackberry Pearl 8100, 8110, 8120 or 8130, you might want to wipe all of the data off of it and start fresh. You may want to try resetting the device first by removing the battery from the unit for about 5 seconds and reinserting it. If that doesn’t help things, proceed with these steps to erase all data on the device.
You may want to backup your data before trying these steps.
1. On the Home screen, select Options.
2. Select Security Options.
3. Click General Settings.
4. Press the Menu key.
5. Click Wipe Handheld.
6. Click Continue.
7. Type blackberry.
All the data on your BlackBerry Pearl will then be deleted.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Pearl roller ball

It might be a case where the track ball has some dirt or debris underneath it. First, turn the device off. Next, press down firmly on the track ball while at the same time rolling it in every direction. Hopefully that will knock loose any debris. Another tip to try is to wet your thumb with a little water and do the same thing.

If those two options don't work, you may try taking out the track ball and blowing out the slot with some compressed air. Below is a link that shows how to remove and clean the track ball:
