Question about Computers & Internet

S.m.a.r.t said my hard drive was going to crash and that I was to backup all my files immediately. I backed up everything onto my simpletech simpledrive 500gb external. I bought a new hard drive. Intalled it. Installed window vista 32bit and now would like to reinstall all my backed up files. I am showing stuff such as program files/eset/eset NOD32 antivirus/...and from here dat files and a folder called Mozilla Thunderbird. I cannot get my programs to work. Please help.

Hi,

Actually, the word "back up" is just for all you data, not software.
Because software, you need to re-install and re-configure it.
So, you said anti virus and mozilla, it is software, not data.
Try to download the installer and re-install it.

DISC CRACH

If your hard drive is "crashing" and you can still access it, copy any important files off of it thay you want, like docs, pictures, music, etc... From there, you need to replace the hard drive, they are not extermely expensive and easy to install. If this is your main drive with your OS on it, you will then have to reinstall windows or whatever OS you have, then copy your files onto the new hard drive. If you cannot boot up because it is your main drive and has already crashed, your best bet is to get a new one and reinstall your OS, then get an external hard drive reader and try to access it and get your files that you want. If it is crashed, not accesible, the only way is to take it to an expert, which is very expensive. Unless these are "must have, can't live without" files, you probably will just have to take your lumps on losing that data. Either way, when your HDD starts to go, it is usually only a matter of time before it totally crashes so a "repair" or quarentining any bad sectors is only a band aid and will eventually, sooner than later, die on you all the way.

Rikiki external hard drive clicking sound

The clicking noise is an indication of a head-crash. The drive is damaged and won't be usable. Restore your files from your backup drive.

If you don't have a backup drive, you'll have to pay someone to try to recover your data.

I just reformatted my 500GB eGo Helium USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive so that my PC running Windows 7 would recognize it. It is now recognized, but not seeing any of the files on the drive. Is there...

All your files are still stored on the hard drive. They're just invisible or inaccessible. You can recover them with data recovery software.

I used this one to recover files from my infected laptop and it worked.Anyway, you can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether you can recover your data.
Hope this help!

I have a Lacie 1TB Big Disk Extreme. It has recently developed a loud regular whirring noise, that goes on and off every few seconds. What should I do? Thanks! Adrian

The irregular clicking or chunking sound usually indicates that your hard drive is suffering from physical damage. immediately backup your data, your hard disk will die soon.

This problem can be caused by the following:

  • Head Crash
  • Bad Sectors
  • Mechanical Faults

If your hard disk is under warranty then you contact your manufacturer.
Hard disk drive occasionally produces a whirring sound when it searches for a file which is heavily fragmented. This is caused by the spinning platters as the read-write heads zoom back and forth to access the sectors where the data is stored. It is important to distinguish the whirling sound from the clicking sound. This whirring sound can be reduced by periodically defragmenting your hard drive. Defragmenting reorganizes the scattered data on the hard drive to make files and programs run faster. It relocates the commonly accessed files to the beginning of the hard disk where data can load at a faster rate.

The hard drive will make a clicking noise, and randomly lag then crash. When I restart, it will sometimes say "unable to boot from hard disk. please insert a bootable drive".

Your hard drive is dying. The best thing to do would be to immediately back up any files you want to keep onto an external hard drive. Replace the hard drive and restore your files. I'm sorry for the bad news but I hope this helps.

My WD wants to install syn software. None of the files look like the files originally pulled for backup. My hard drive crashed and I need to restore to a new Hard drive - what do I do?

When you connect the drive, ignore the sync option. Do note in your "my computer" WD will have two drive letters (one is a read only drive) that contains the sync software. The other drive letter will be where you data is stored. If you used the sync software to backup your files; you need to install to get your data back. If you simply copied your data from one drive to another; the files should be there in their original form.

When you backup your software, you need to backup the installation files, not the software once it is installed as the installation procedure places various files within the Windows system folders. Simply restoring the backed up files will not re-install that software. You should back up your data files etc but the software on your old drive will need to be re-installed from scratch.

Don't know how to use product, no directions

It should plug in as a Windows Storage device. This will appear as another drive on the computer.
Copy the file across the "new" drive.
Then ask windows to stop using the drive  by clicking on the USB device icon and selecting stop storage device.
Then you can disconnect it safely.

Check the cables between the devices. If youve changed out the HD and the DVD drive and still got an issue, the cables are most likely the culprit. If that doesnt help, change the jumper settings on your IDE drives (if master slave setup switch to cable select and vice versa).
