Question about Ace Hardware Living Accents Patio Heater Cover

1 Answer

Out of the box the patio heater didn't work and I never returned it. The pilot would light then when you move the knob to the on postion the pilot would go out and it wouldn't fire up. I bought a new regulator and now the pilot flame is tall and yellow the heater turns on for about five minutes then extinguishes. Any ideas?

If it is beyond any adjustment period from Ace, I suggest you take this to a full service propane service center for repair. You shuld first check with your Ace hardware man.

When the pilot flame is tall and yellow it normally means there is a partial blockage in the pilot tube or pilot jet orifice. Try cleaning out the pilot tube and orifice.

I have a Kirkland patio heater model # PTH-106SS-3G the pilot will not stay lit. Do I need to replace the whole pilot assembly

Hi, If the pilot light goes out when you turn the gas knob to full power on lighting them the most likely cause will be a worn thermocouple, these usually last between 2 years up to 6 years. Found this site very helpful, patio heater problem solving. They have a few solutions to checking patio heaters.

The pilot seems to light but then when I turn the knob to ignite the main burner, the pilot goes out. Is there a technique to clean the igniting assembly?

let the pilot light burn for a few min and get hot after this try slowly moving the knob over to full burn. Sometimes it just need to heat up.

Pilot on my patio heater will not stay lit. goes out when i release the knob

If the heater is the same as this type of patio heater and it lights on pilot and goes out it is generally a worn thermocouple. These are designed to switch off the patio heater when something is wrong, changing one fixed 90% of the problems. Sometimes it can also be caused by a worn tilt switch but always start with the most likley and work backwards. Found this site very useful, patio heater problem solving page.

The system works off of a thermocouple that is heated by the pilot. The thermocouple creates millivolts that magnetize a head behind the control knob. When you push in the knob the magnetized head behind the knob holds the gas valve open. So obviously the head is not being magnetized. First make sure that the pilot is not plugged and the flame is large enough to heat the thermocouple. Also sometimes you may need to hold the knob for several minutes before the pilot will stay on. Also patio heaters have a safety feature that will cut the millivolt circuit if the heater falls over. It is possible that this safety device is tripped or defective causing the pilot to not stay lit. Also check for any loose wires on the millivolt system.

If you have a piezo ignition, then all you will hear is one click when you turn the knob. If I am guessing correctly, when you push in the knob and turn it, the gas flows to the pilot assembly, when you turn the knob far enough it will clilck and that sends the spark to the pilot assembly to light the pilot. Try turning the knob slowly before you get to the click, that will allow more gas to flow to the pilot. If this does not work, then you may have a blockage in the pilot.

Well, I just went out this morning and worked on the heater after it would not light last night. Turns out that a spider or moth set up camp in the pilot light intake housing and plugged up the two small mixer holes that pull in air for the pilot light. This would explain the 'yellow-flame'. I took a punch awl and some compressed air and cleaned out the hole, then re-installed the cover and knob. Lastly, I turned and depressed the knob and the pilot light ignited almost instantly, stayed on when I let the knob up, and the heater turned on normally after that. Good luck, I hope this helps.

Patio Heater pilot lights won't stay lit

crappy pilot flame (not properly heating the thermocouple), bad thermocouple, thermocouple loose where it screws into the pilot safety valve, bad safety valve magnet.

One or more of those is the problem.

Oh...there is also a saftey switch...in case it tips over. It will also cause the pilot to not stay lit (if the switch or wires that go to i are faulty)

You have to hold the button down for 30 seconds at least before turning the knob to ON. If you are doing this and it still goes out after you let up on the knob, then it needs a new flame sensor, or thermocouple. Same thing different names.
