Question about Efficient Networks 5930 ADSL Business Gateway (120-5930-901) Router

Firewall Updates (Software vs Hardware)

Does the concept of keeping a firewall patched with the latest updates apply to a software firewall, hardware firewall, or both. I ask because I'm a regulator, and part of our work program specifically identifies the importance of keeping "the firewall" patched and updated. I understand the concepts of both hardware and software firewall, but my colleagues are non technical. We were recently at a small bank that used a Siemens/Efficient 5930 Gateway with a built in firewall. My colleagues thought the bank should be written up for not updating their firewall. I told them, in most cases that a hardware firewall usually requires much less patching than a software firewall. In fact, I could find a firmware update for this model anywhere. Any guidance is appreciated.

If the updates indicate that they correct a security flaw then they should be applied.
If the updates add features or enhance features then they are not critical and should be considered optional.

I have audited banks and the most important thing is to make sure that any problems reported by their last federal audit are addressed before the next audit. Get the bank to give you their last federal audit report and go from there.

I have a hacker ruining all of my games&it is getting back into my personal computer

Go into the router administration page on the internet find the wireless connection and insert a wep key on the router. Once you do make sure you reconfigure your entire network. Including if you have a anti-virus and firewall software installed make sure it also detects any threats to you and your system. It completely will secure it from hackers. Use AVG or Norton for both anti-virus and firewall. You don't need the hardware version of a firewall just software. Most of them will come with a built-in firewall and others need to be configured. So make sure when your in your wireless page configure your firewall.

Making my computor secure

Keep the computer in a secure room or cabinet to prevent unauthorized physical access.
Require all users to enter a complex password to logon to the computer.
Install security software to protect against viruses and malicious software and make sure you keep it up to date.
Enable the firewall on your computer or use security software that includes a firewall.
Install critical and security updates for your operating system and keep it updated.
Use a wired connection to the Internet instead of wireless which can be hacked.
If you must use wireless then use WPA2 encryption. All others can be easily hacked. Require a complex password for the wireless password, hide the wireless network ID (SSID) so no one can see it and, if possible, configure the router to only allow specific computers to connect. This is called MAC filtering.

If this helps please vote for my solution.

Not Sure, but...

ha, this is a funny thing, this "port forwarding" that these programs require. (typically only for updates and patches.) I can tell you exatly what your problem is.......your router. you see, the dgn2200 has a built in firewall that trumps all the software on your computer, period. The fact that it is embedded in the router requires you to log into the router using its ip address in your normal web browser. I can't remember the ip adress off the top of my head, but it should be something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254 You probably recognize the last one if you accessed your 2wire this way. (if you need the book, i hope you didnt throw it away either)

You need to make yourself familiar with all the aspects of this router, as it will, by nature, affect your connections and other activity in the future.

So, select firewall settings and you are looking for something called the "DMZ host" it may be under the port forwarding sub-menu, but like i said before, I'm am an expert at the art, but don't know every system in and out. DMZ will put your computer on the front side of the firewall and allow you to do anything you want will maintaining the firewall on the remaining network.

JUMP BACK BEHIND THE FIREWALL WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED PATHCING, you dont want to get caught by a hacker hanging out outside your firewall.

GOOD LUCK AND PLS RATE THIS POST!!!!!

How do i disable the firewall to enable updates? some updates won't install, error code seems to suggest a firewall may be stopping this, the router has a firewall and i think this may be causing the...

The router firewall should never be the cause of failing updates. If the update is detected and download, the installation can only fail because of local computer settings, not a router's firewall.
So your PC's firewall could (maybe) be the cause, but even that is not common.

What is the error message? And is this a Windows update or a specific program update?

When I activate the firewall on SBG900, I cannot access Gmail . .

Hi Geothe5228,

My name is ArmyMason, let me see if I have this straight, you want to know if you need the firewall software turned on in your router, if you have it installed on the computer. If this is the question I would have to say, I would find it safer having two firewalls running than one. Anyways Hardware firewalls are much safer than software firewalls, because it blocks the attacks before they get to the computer. Hope this answers your question. If you need further assistance I would suggest posting this question on a forum.

Thanks,
ArmyMason

Router Firewall

Not entirely. Hardware firewalls (such as the one in your router) will block incoming connection attempts based on the port they're using, the protocol, and a number of other factors (varied between firewall brands). Some are designed to block only popular attacks (DoS, PoD, crackers on port 80, Telnet connect attempts, etc...) while others will block a larger variety of attacks.

Anyways, software firewalls will block almost all incoming Internet traffic (except for the ones defined in the exceptions) along with almost all outgoing Internet traffic. The only way I find this to be useful is if you're trying to keep some private information private, or if you use that computer to determine if some software is trying to phone home (web beacon, trojan, dialer, etc...).

I really don't see the need for Software firewalls unless you're a hard-core web-surfer and don't care what you click on. If you do like the extra security, perhaps one of the better software firewalls is made by ESET.

I prefer ESET to Symantec's Personal Firewall because Symantec's Firewall on one of my older systems was hijacked by a virus a few years back which allowed the virus unprecedented access to the root of my Operating System. The virus gutted the computer without any alerts from Norton CE or the Firewall.

Anyways, I hope this was the answer you were looking for. If not, please feel free to respond with more details on what you were truly asking. All the best. ;-)

Software Firewalls and Linksys Routers

You can never have too much security, however there are some firewalls that will not work with hardware firewalls, that includes the all Linksys Routers . Keeping this in mind, some software firewall will continue working after the router is installed. If it does, it shouldn't need to remove it, because it's an extra layer of security. However if there are difficulties using the Internet with the Software firewall after installing the router, try disableing it to see if internet is accessable. If the internet works after disabling the software firewall, then remove the firewall.
