Question about DVD & Blu-Ray Players

5 Answers

I own a Polaroid personal DVD player model pdm-0711. I love it. It hasn't been used a whole lot and I keep it carefully put away when not in use. I recently took it out to use it and found that it would play a music cd and will also play a picture cd with all photos on it, but for some reason it will not read a dvd. Any dvd. Dvd's I've watched on it before... what could be wrong? Is there a setting somewhere I missed? or is it fried? Please help!

Yes, it shows "no disk" I did go through the whole manual and even did a default reset on it and it still won't work...

  • LeonieMarie Mar 28, 2008

yes, I've tried several that I've used in the player before, as well as some I haven't ONLY dvd's will not play showing a "No disc" message. I can hear it initially try to read the disc it makes a loud noise when it tries to read it, then it stops and then it tries to read it a second time before I get the message.

I am running a lens cleaner cd on it right now. If that doesn't work, I'll probably have to have it serviced...does anyone know if cost wise it's worth servicing? (vs. purchasing a new one) I have no idea what that might cost?

  • LeonieMarie Mar 28, 2008

I tried a lens cleaner and it still isn't working. It read the lens cleaner disk fine.
It's only movies that it won't read. How very odd... Can anyone comment on if it's worth servicing vs purchasing a new one, cost wise? Thanks all for the great suggestions.

Benimur, I wish I could do that unfortunately, it's a personal dvd player by polaroid and it did not come with a remote control!! So I can't try this.

    Dear,
According to your last comment, it seems that your lens is faulty thatswhy its unable to sense any DVD . my suggestion is you just contact to any Authorised polaroid Service centre , because its just not recognise any DVd ,infact according to you its reads all Cd's perfectly. so there be a some intermitten problem with this.

    Regards

Hi,

Some design incorporated two (2) separate lenses for CD and DVD. Perhaps initially, what is simply needed it to clean the lens. A CD cleaner readily available from most computer stores and/or an electronic/audio shop should be sufficient for most needs. Alternately, if the lens are easily accessible, cotton bud(s) would also do for manual cleaning. Additional a can of compress air can remove most dust, debris or foreign materials inside.

If problem persists, pls post back that we may perform further diagnosis.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

    Hi again,

With the indulgence of the others,

    Please try this:
    1. Turn on the unit.

    2. Press "Set-Up" button and advance to the far right-hand tab "Preferences". Do not hit Enter.

    3. Using the remote control, Enter Code # 1379 then use the "Enter Key" to change the Region Code.
"0" for all regions or region free.
    4. Once code is chosen, press enter.

I think problem is the rubber belt inside the unit. cause of that is the desallignment of the dvd disk.. you need to replace it..

Have you try a DVD that you know it worked before?

  • Jaime Hernandez Mar 28, 2008

You can try smilemaker suggestions, since the DVD player was not in use for some time, the laser might have collected some dust or even some moisture.

  • Jaime Hernandez Mar 28, 2008

If the repair will cost you 1/3 of the what you pay for it, is worth it; but considering that you do not have the remote that for sure will add up to the cost.

At this point it might be cheaper just to buy another DVD player, the cost of the repair could be the same as getting a new one.

Hello LeonieMarie ,

Try cleaning the lens using lens cleaner ... or if possible remove the player and try cleaning it manually ....

I have a Polaroid pdm-08228bd that whenever we put

when you open the cover for the DVD you will see the laser ..its a small lens like device mounted on a spring like assembly .. you can manually clean that laser with a soft paper towell soaked in eyeglass lens cleaning solution .. dont spray the solution on the laser directly .. make sure the spindle spins freely in the center where the disk mounts ... when you close the lid and turn power on you should be able to hear the disk spin .. if you can hear it spin and hear some clicking but still wont play then you likely have a worn out laser .. unfortunately the cost of installing a new laser is often greater than the cost of a new DVD player ...
here are a few models that might be worth looking at ..

Broken Door: Polaroid PDM-0711

You probably cant replace the door because usually they produce a small run of these players and then create a new model and discontinue the old one very quickly. My suggestion is to look if there is a small button around the area the tab would normally go to when you close the door. If you can see this button try to find someting that would keep it pressed down. This tricks the player into thinking that the door is closed. WARNING: This button also activates the laser reading unit so you must have a dvd loaded before you press the button so you dont accidently look straight into the laser unit. IF YOU LOOK INTO THE LASER YOU CAN CAUSE PERMANENT EYE DAMAGE OR EVEN BLINDNESS.
