There are Flapper plates in the exhaust. They can burn out especially when running with the Muffs for winterizing. Then problems shows up first time you take it out. Usually this problem does not show while boat is moving. The bad flapper allows water to draw up into the engine like having a straw in a drink.
Sometimes when decellerating or Transom to the waves a rush of water goes past failed Flapper and into engine. Instant Hydro lock.

Its easier to change the Flapper than removing a head and you know which exhaust to target. When you get the Flapper out, the parts guys can easily tell you if its junk.

What is normal oil pressure for 1998 mercruiser 7.4 boat motor?

Hi Lauren:
Depending on the number of hours on the engine, and the maintenance schedule followed, it can vary quite a bit.
Here's what I would consider to be acceptable.
Cold start, fast idle - 80 - 95 PSI
Engine warmed up - running speed - 70 - 85 PSI
Engine warmed up - Idle - 40 - 50 PSI
Anything higher than 95 could be blowin seals
Anything lower than 35 could be indication of excessive engine wear.
Bottom line -
If it's not burning oil, and
its not leaking oil, and
You're not getting valve clatter or other engine sounds like piston slap or knocking, and the running pressures are close to what I mentioned, enjoy the boat and go chase fish.

All the gear lube on my bravo III leaked out. The oil came out where the prop and the lower unit meet.

we had replaced the engine in our 87 4.3 star craft and when we put the omc cobra stern drive back in we now dont have foward gear, we have nuetral and reverse. could it be the linkage or could it be the shifter cable or any other idea's that could be the problem.

1990 454 mercruiser misfire under load when warmed up

Running on a stand is not the same as running under power...In the water, you are essentially running on a dynomometer (dyno is a big water brake) If you can prove that the module isn't putting in enough advance, it would be doing the same thing that I mentioned with the damper, only for a different reason.'re likely on the right track. (rather have a points setup out on the water...anything goes wrong, you fix it without a tow!!!!)
Good luck

Timer ticking but backwash will not back wash and clock frozen

It is very common for the main and brine pistons of the Fleck 5600 to need replacement after 5 - 10 years of use. The valve will get stuck trying to complete a regeneration cycle. Very often this occurs at the beginning of the "brine rinse" cycle. The timer motor may stop at this point also. The motors are made to stop instead of forcing the valve ( which would result in gear damage ).
The solution is to replace the main piston ( # 60102-00 for water softeners ) and the brine valve piston assembly ( # 60032 ). If the valve is on a chlorinated water source or over 10 years old, it is recommended to replace the main piston seals ( # 60125 ) at the same time.
On rare occasions the timer motor may also need to be replaced. But try the pistons replacement first, this usually does the trick.
There are detailed instructions for replacement including a video here.
