Battery not recognised/not charging

Turn the computer off, unplug it, take the battery out. Then hold the power button down for 10 - 15 seconds. Plug the ac adapter back in, but do not put the battery in yet. Boot the computer, then shut it back down. Put the battery back in then boot it again. It should recognize the system now.

The is something wrong with the booting of the computer. Does it pass the initial BIOS boot screen? Try pressing F8 once every second after pressing the power button and see if you can boot the computer in safe mode.

Your computer tries to "boot" from several sources:
* your disk-drive
* your CD-ROM drive
* any USB device
* from a "boot-server" computer connected to your computer via an Ethernet cable

So, you computer tried to boot from the Broadcom Ethernet adapter, trying to "talk" to that "network boot server", via PXE ("Pre eXecution Environment").

What this probably means is that the computer failed to boot from the disk-drive, and so it tried the "alternate" boot-devices. If the disk-drive is disconnected (no power and/or no data cable) or if the disk-drive is "dead", then Windows cannot be loaded from it.

Take your computer to a qualified technician for professional trouble-shooting.

Insert your restore CD if errors are found and not fixed by the checkdisk function listed above. Turn your computer off and then back on. You'll beasked to hit any button to boot from your CD; press any key. You will then beasked if you want to install a fresh version of your OS or "Repair" acurrent copy. Choose the "Repair" option.

Most likely the boot sector is corrupt.Try to boot by starting the Computer and hitting F8, or F12 you need to get to your start windows splash screen.Then try Start Windows from Last Known Good Configuration.If that don't work try Safe Mode.If none work you will need to recreate your .boot file, or try recovery fron CD.It gets complicated explaining how to rebuild your boot sector,If you have access to internet search "how to rebuild boot sector Windows XP".There are programs you can download and then load/run to rebuild boot.This has happened to me or someone I know and it is a pain to fix.You need some knowledge of how boot loads and how to repair.Try to get someone you know to help you.The problem was caused by the shut down.I think you ment XP can't Boot.Good Luck

Inspiron 1420 is not booting to windows

Hi,
Re-boot, Keep tapping F8 until you get to a black screen, last known good is there, choose this, leave it to run,

or try again re-boot, choosing safe mode this time, if/when it boots, then a system restore in safe mode, go back in time.

If still no good, Your O/S disc is now needed,
boot with disc, go for a repair of the install,
Let it run it's course,
re-boot.

Regards.

Will not boot up or turn on though it is getting power

The Charger could be bad, Try replacing that, or let charge, then try to turn on. The laptop might not boot with AC power. kinda stupid but maybe. If that doesn't work, the AC adapter is bad.

Failing or clogged fan fan is a good possibility. Fans are cheap on ebay for those and easy to install (2 screws underneath the laptop to remove the keyboard and 3 for the fan assembly itself. I would pull the keyboard and check for dust then replace the fan if that doesnt help.
