Two seperate issues. You can order new disks on ebay for example but if your product key is unreadable you need to purchase a new key.
See this link to buy - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-Windows-Home-Premium-inkl/dp/B008OT79T4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1426423337&sr=8-2&keywords=windows+7+coa

For the first one, you need to enter BIOS and set the HDD settings. Maybe you can automatic detect it once and then the system knew where to load system from. If it can see the hard disk and reads it but no operating system found, then you may need to check the operating system on your hard disk.
For the second one, I do think it is better to upgrade to a upper level OS such as Windows 7. While you have Vista you will have better deal with Windows 7. If you do have a agreement with Microsoft to have newer OS for free in a certain period, you can get Windows 7 for free. If you don't have that agreement, you can get Upgrade version of windows 7 with a huge discount if you have Vista.
You can actually back up your data to an wim file on vista and restore all the data and settings after the upgrading. But be sure to keep a full backup of your hard disk and everything just in case.
You can enter BIOS and make sure booting from CD first. Then there is a key you need to press very early in the booting process to launch the recovery. There is also a factory default restore you can use. Did you call HP to find out what the key is and how to use factory default restoration? You can always plug the hard disk to other computer to back up the data and then restore to factory default and put the data back.

How to reset Dell PC E521 to original factory settings. Will I lose my email?

You need to use your system restore disk, or Use the "recovery disk" options is on the partitioned Hard drive.
If you are using the CD recovery Disk,
1. Turn your computer off
2. Turn on and when you see the white bar loading for the dell bios, press F12 or whichever the option is for one-time boot menu.
3. Select the drive that specifies your cd-drive.

Resetting your System OS back to default settings will erased all your previous Settings & Data too!!
Backup all your important data before restoring back to the default factory settings.

Hope it helps.

Reboot the computer, and carefully watch the screen.
One of the options should be to access the "recovery partition".
Press the listed key to boot from that partition,
and to "restore" your software to the "factory" level.

Uncompatible software creates problem in WindowVista Home Premium

Before you format your drive try to boot to safe mode and see if you can try to uninstal the uncompatiable software.

  1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
  2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

Hi Alex.
Try this.
Switch computer on and press ctr and the f11 key whilst it is booting up. From there you should be presented with a screen which will give you the option to restore back to factory settings.
