Remove the starter gear cover and check that the gear has all its teeth and as you rotate it by hand it moves freely up to the flywheel gear and drops down without resistance to its neutral point
Be sure your battery is fully charged also

If the engine isn't turning over, how can you be sure the starter is engaging? If you're just hearing a click, the starter solenoid is probably working, but may not be completing the circuit through the electrical contacts in the solenoid which activate the starter.
If the starter is actually engaging, and if the battery has proper power, but the engine is not turning over, you have a locked up engine - mechanical issues (or hydraulic lock if there is fluid in one or more combustion chamber). Try turning the engine with a socket and breaker bar on the front crankshaft pulley.

1999 Pontiac Sunfire 5 speed won't start. Replaced spark plugs and checked ignition coil (fine). Sounds like it wants to turn over but makes a "whining" noise. Please assist. Thank you!

Is the engine turning over with the key in the start position? If the engine is not spinning over and you hear a whining noise, the starter is not engaging the flywheel. If the engine is turning over with the starter engaged, the engine has most likely jumped time that creates low or no compression which results in the whining noise.

I have a 2000 toyota celica gts and it wont start or turn over the starter will make like a whinning sound but its not trying to crank the engine maybe its the starter but just in case its not anybody have...

Likely either the starter or solenoid. Solenoid is a combination of relay and actuator, pushing the starter's gear into engagement with your flywheel.

SOLENOID KICKIN OUT BUT STARTER NOT ENGAGING

Starter clutch. Not uncommon on Suzuki. Not a budget killer if you can do it yourself. Get a service manual.

Battery is good but when I turn it on it just clicks won't start, maybe after 20 times it starts

Without hearing the sound it makes - it's kind of hard to diagnose.

The engine starting process consists of turning the key to start, the starter motor's rotor moving forward to engage the engine's flywheel, and then the starter motor 's "rotor" spinning until you move the key from "start" to "run". You can hear the starter motor spinning - but one usually can't hear the rotor moving forward to engage the flywheel. As a result, you hear the odd spinning sound - which is the starter rotor spinning. The engine never actually turns over because the rotor never engages the fly wheel. If this is the case, then it is very likely that your starter needs to be checked and / or replaced.

Good luck!

Engin will not turn over, bought a new starter an starter silondid. but it still will not turn over, what do i do?

Stupid question but I have to ask, did you check the fuses for the starter and ignition? When you say replacing the starter and solenoid did not work, did you hear the starter engaging or any clicking? You might try a remote starter switch to see if it is your ignition if you do not hear the starter engage or click.

Freelander unable to start at turn of key,

Does the starting solenoid engages? This is would sound like a deep clunk on your starter. When the solenoid engages it close the contact that energize the starter motor, but a worn contact on the solenoid would result in it engaging but not having enough current to turn the engine resulting in a clunking noise when you try to start.
The starter solenoid gets its 12 volt from a relay. This is referred to as the starter relay. If you try to crank, and you hear only a click but the starter do not turn, then the contacts on the relay maybe worn.
To sum it up, if you hear a loud clunk when it dont crank, its the starter solenoid. If you hear just a click but no crank, it could be the starter relay.

1997 GRAND MARQUIS THE CAR WANTS TO TURN OVER BUT IT WON'T

If I understand the problem, you turn the key, you hear the starter engage, but the engine itself does not turn over. Sounds like the gear that connects the starter to the fly wheel may be damaged. To check, remove the starter and inspect the end with the gear for any teath missing or damaged.

Starter won't engage

better yet...............even if you have the minimun 12.5 volts on the battery, the amps may not be suffiicent to turn the starter and you will hear a clacking noice. the battery probably needs to be replaced.
