Use what ever backup software you have or the backup facility in your application.
(windows include's one)

when you commence the backup, you will need to select what files you want to backup, usualy by putting a tick in the appropriate box's ,then it will ask you where to back them up too ,select your external hard drive, either by selecting the icon for the drive or in a drop down menu.

hope this is of help ,
don't hesitate to ask any questions if i am not being clear.

good luck
Terry

Hi,

Actually, the word "back up" is just for all you data, not software.
Because software, you need to re-install and re-configure it.
So, you said anti virus and mozilla, it is software, not data.
Try to download the installer and re-install it.

Tip

Keeping external external hard drives safe from shock.

Generally, dropping an external hard drive while it is running is a pretty sure way to destroy the drive, along with the data that was on it. Similarly, objects dropped onto running external hard drives can provide sufficient G-forces to kill the drive and its data. Such events are generally not covered under product warranties. Perhaps more importantly, drives subjected to excessive G-forces usually present a situation in which data stored on them is not recoverable. If you use external drives to store or back up critical data, use extra care to prevent such accidents.
To prevent such unfortunate incidents, locate external hard drives so that they are not susceptible to being knocked to the floor, or to have objects fall on to them. Another cause of data failure is from improperly connected cables. Ensure that all cables associated with computers and their peripherals are firmly connected, and safely arranged so they cannot cause unexpected disasters caused by wayward feet and clumsy hands.

Hard drive failure in system less than 2 years old!!

Since you are comfortable with working inside your computer, the best thing to do now is to purchase an external enclosure for your type of hard drive, SATA or EIDE.

Alternately you can use a live linux cd, boot up with that, and transfer your data to an external drive.

Once your data is safe, try booting to the Windows cd and attempt a repair installation.

And finally, yes, hard drives can go bad in 2 years or less.

HELP - I have an Acomdata External Hard Drive (I think 160GB). Have used it sucessfully 1x month for all of my kids pictures (about 100GB) for the past year. Just tried to use it with the same power...

Try a different power supply. Also check cables from the Ext. Hard Drive to the computer. If none of that helps and you know how, open the Ext. Hard Drive case and remove the Hard Drive from the case. Connect the Hard Drive to the appropriate BUS and power source inside the computer. You may have to adjust the jumpers, probably to a slave setting. If it still doesn't work then the Hard Drive may be toast. This is the reason I always back up important files onto two different devices. If one fails the info is still on the other one. That is all I can think of right now. Hope you get your kid's picts back.

My maxtor external hard drive has done a scheguled Plan b backup but files that I removed from my master hard drive to free up space because I had them saved on my external hard drive are now missing from...

When a file is delete, it's still there on the drive, just as before; all that happens is that the file table marks it as free space and changes its name so it's no longer visible. There are a number of "undelete" utilities available, including several good ones, like asoftech data recovery that helped me before:

How to reformat without loosing wanted data??

best way to do this would be one of two options.

First copy all your wanted data onto a CD / DVD (DVD RW best) and then once you've reformated your pc copy them back onto your desktop

The next option would be to buy an external harddrive. These are great because you can just move all the data you want back and force between your computer and external harddrive. This might be your best choice but it is a bit more costly

Reinstall software to use my 160GB freeAgent Go USB

Hi, I am assuming that you are referring to a USB based external hard drive called Free Agent, by Seagate I think.

Which operating system are you using ?

Windows XP has native support for USB, and it should automatically detect the hard drive when you plug it in.
It should NOT require any other software to access the drive.

if not:
1) Check that the HD is powered up
2) Try a different USB cable
3) Try a different USB socket

4) Make sure that the HARD drive is correctly formatted:
i.e. Assuming you are running Windows XP
(Vista should have similar facilities)

Goto to the Control Panel -->
Double click on Administrative Tools
Double click on Computer Management
Look down, under storage,
Click on "Disk Management"
Give it a couple seconds to search for drives,
and to populate the list ...

Check to see if the external disk appears in the list:
It should be partitioned with an EXTENDED partition,
containing a LOGICAL drive, and formatted with NTFS.

If necessary, partition and format the drive, assuming
you have not already done so, and the drive does not
contain any data.

If the drive did previously contain your data, you can
either loose the data and re-format it, or you can hire
a data recovery company to repair the damaged drive.

Clicking sound from lacie hard drive can i fix it.... I know the drive is dying or dead, i just want to be able to save as much data as possible

you're right, the hard drive is dying, you need to get an external hard drive and dump the entire contents onto it, or if you have another pc, you can network them and dump the files onto the other pc. ( personally, I recommend the former, you can now get external hard drives from 250 to 500 Gb quite cheaply )
