Usually 'black' or greyscale uses all colours to get a true black in many printers. Check you particular printer manual and soft ware to see if it allows for black/grey only. You could experiment [I don't know this particular printer] by putting black carts in all slots [If it is a chipped cart you may have to consider swapping the chips on the carts if removable. Some specialist ink firms[Lycos] do supply monochrome sets for certain printers - check them out. Also take a look at www.fixyourownprinter.com

There are a few possible causes for the light print.
The first is the easiest to try and least expensive.
If you actually had a bad toner cartridge, and the toner was not making its way down the toner tube to the developer, then you may be able to fix the issue by simply doing a developer cleaning on the black developer. What this actually does is force aggitator to move toner down the tube into the developer. You can activate this from the maintenance menu.
If this does not fix the issue, then more then likely the black developer unit itself is defective and needs to be replaced.

Selecting grayscale only will also make use of your color. when u select grayscale, look under the print options and select black cartridge only and for more economic printing, use fast draft or draft printing.

If you take the empty cartridge out and put a small piece of electrical tape over the little window on the front, the printer will think the ink is full.

The Grayscale print option optimizes the look of color slides for printing on a black and white printer by adding shading. The Pure Black and White option prints your slides in monochrome.
