Go to: http://www.drystacked.com for a 12 page PDF document on Walbro carburetors. Pay special attention to the caution about the lower chamber gasket and the diaphragm. Crankshaft seals rarely become a problem until the crankshaft main bearings have worn so much that the crank shaft can be visibly moved sideways. Make sure the muffler and air cleaner are not plugged. A basic setting for H and L jet screws is turn both CW to stops (lightly), then back out CCW 1-1/2 turns each. The engine should start and run with these settings. Allow the engine to warm up, then open the throttle and adjust H CW until the engine starts to speed up but continue 4-stroking. Proper final adjustment is 4-stroking, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Let idle and adjust L CW until engine runs fairly well, but will allow the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Set idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps.

I have a poulin pro 220 chainsaw. I just replaced the primerbulb and the only way it stays running is if the choke is fully on. If you put the choke to half or off it runs for a few seconds then dies

Check and see if the fuel line is collapsing when you start. The wonderful gas that we have contains alcohol which deteriorates rubber. Gas lines and many carburetor parts are eaten up by this gas. When you go to start your saw it has enough to run but the suction from the carburetor collapses the fuel line, weakened from the alcohol, not allowing any more fuel to pass. When the suction stops, when the saw shut off, the fuel opens up again allowing you to start it again. I had this problem when the government forced this crappy gas on us in the late eighties and I had to carry extra spare parts for my saws because of these problems. Anyways enough ranting, try and change the fuel line and that would most likely be your problem. If it is an old saw it might have done damage to your carburetor and it will need a carburetor kit/rebuild which is not usually too expensive. Hope this helped.

Replaced all fuel lines and pickup fuel filter. but won't stay running without choke.

Take the carburetor off and clean it and check and replace any air filters you may have. Can't say that this will fix it ,but it is a starting point for you. Hope it works and good luck.

I have a McCulloch MS1636NAV chain saw. The engine starts with the choke pulled out. When I push the choke in the saw dies. I've changed the spark plug, replaced the air filter. changed the gas, 40:1.

Its either sucking air in throgh a loose connection in the fuel line or the carb is stopped up. Take it apart very easy so you don't rip any gaskets, and clean evertthing with a can of compressed air blow all the tubes out real good. You may have to get a carb kit it that does not work.

But that sounds like what it is, running out of gas when you let more air to it.

Starts but dies when warmed up or gas it and choke off dose this couple times then wont start till totaly cold again

Check the fuel filter, air filter, and muffler for plugging. Inspect the fuel lines for decay or damage. Make sure the carburetor fasteners are tight including the carburetor to cylinder mountings. If still not running properly, service the carburetor and rekit if the diaphragm in the lower chamber is hard or cracked. Also, inspect the fuel metering valve that the diaphragm controls. If the tip of the needle is damaged, replace it. Remove the spark plug and check for snappy, blue spark when the saw will not start. Hope this helps!

Poulan saw wont run

Clean the muffler spark arrestor screen and check the cylinder port for carbon build-up at the upper edge. Try presetting both carburetor H and L adjustments (from lightly CW stops) 1-1/2 turns CCW each. Start the engine and allow to warm up. Pull the throttle wide open and adjust H CW until the engine speed increases, but still 4-stroking. Correct setting is when the engine 4-strokes, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Allow to idle and adjust L for smoother running, yet allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Set idle speed to keep the engine running, but doesn't try to move the chain. You may have to look closer at your carburetor if the above doesn't help. Go to:

for an excellent article (but poor pix) on Walbro carburetors, but related to most all 2-stroke carburetors. Hope this helps!

Poulan PP446T Pole Saw. Will run only if choke is fully closed. Open the choke and it stalls. Have replaced the fuel filter, cleaned carb, installed carb kit. Cleaned gas lines. Good gas mixture(other saw...

It is running lean. There is an air leak somewhere allowing to much air into the cylinder or crankcase. Continuing to operate lean may cause failure. If fuel delivery lines have no pin holes or cracks probably time for some professional help (pressure tests). Remove clean and reinstall the muffler (carbon fouling can also cause this). If the saw cannot exhale, it cannot inhale. HTH

Poulan chain saw mod. SM4018 Hard to start & won't accelerate

Your carburetor needs cleaned. It may also need a carburetor kit, depending on how old or how long it has been since service. While you have it apart, you may as well clean or replace the air filter and check fuel lines for cracks or brittleness. If you need tips on how to clean carb. or changing fuel lines, just let me know.
