My kenmore 80 series washer won't spin or agitate

My kenmore 80 series washer model 110.28872891 won't spin or agiate. It will pump out the water. It has made a terrible knocking sound at the beginning of the spin cycle off and on for a long time but has worked fine. It was never out of balance when this happened. It now suddenly wont spin and I can't turn the agitator by hand either. Any ideas?

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Look in the section for the motor, pump gearcase and you'll see the Motor Coupler.

Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive washers use a "Motor Coupler" between the motor and transmission.

It's used as a fail safe device and consists of three parts.

Two of the parts are the same, plastic units with three prongs that fit on one of the motor output shafts and the other on the transmission input shaft. Between them is a rubber piece with six holes.

The power from the motor is transmitted through the rubber piece to the transmission.

The other shaft on the motor directly drives the pump. This is likely why the machine drains.

If the motor coupler is broken, or worn, the motor may not be able to send full power to the transmission for agitating or spinning.

See the following for how to remove the cabinet, pump, motor and motor mounting plate to inspect and replace the motor coupler.

If the coupler looks damaged, it's a relatively easy fix.

Pry the plastic pieces from the motor and transmission. Some people use a claw hammer but I've found that using a small (6 inch) pry bar works well.

Carefully fit the plastic pieces over the motor and transmission shafts and press them in place (Use a 1/2" of larger socket to put pressure equally around the pieces.

Put the rubber piece on the transmission plastic piece.

Replace the motor mounting plate.

Carefully line up the plastic prongs on the motor based plastic piece to the three un-used holes in the rubber piece. If they don't line up right, the coupler could be damaged.

Mount the motor, don't forget the two screws, put the pump back on the motor and use its' clips.

Put the cabinet back on, don't forget to plug the lid switch back in and re-mount the console.

Yes, Your clutch assm. has worn out or like in my case I really think just needed cleaning. At any rate just replace it. The machine is not to bad to dissasimble once you lay it on its side. Find a local parts store for washers/appliances and purchase clutch kit. most of these places are very helpful and if you can do it yourself will save Money. My machine was only 5 years old when my cluth slipped.

Kenmore 80 series washer model # 110.92283100 that fills up with water then makes a horrible sound when agitating like the gears are stipped. Then it stops spinning and won't turn on for hours/

You might have a sock in the pump.
It might also be a broken coupler or a combo of the 2. The motor is overheating and shutting down on overload.. Could be a coin or something in that pump.

Kenmore washing machine 80 Series 110 20802 990 Will not agitate or spin"

You need to replace the Kenmore Washer Lid Switch. I had the same problem so being lazy I would just push down on the washer's lid and it would push the lid switch further down. making the water drain. after a while I just replaced the lid switch.

Kenmore washer machine series 80

If it will not spin either, you most likely have a broken drive coupler. This machine is "direct drive" and has no belt. As techs, we see this several times during our work week. Otherwise, if you have the "two piece" agitator, you may simply need new "dogs" in the agitator. if the machine spins fine, fill it only on the smallest load size with no clothes in it. When the agitate cycle starts, take note if the bottom section of the agitator is going back and forth. If it is, and the upper part does not "ratchet" then you just need to rebuild the agitator and that is an easy job.
