Open the cover at the back and take the HDD out.
remember that if you are not sure consult someone who knows.

    How do I get to California? Start your car and go west, if you aren't sure as someone. Makes sense to me but Mapquest wouldn't be in business with this kind of junk answer.

simply remove the plastic cover from rear of laptop. a small icon or image of HDD insignia will most likely be on back, near plastic cover. remove the screws, there will be a tab to assit you in pulling out the hard drive from compartment. it may require you to unscrew more screws to release the hard disk drive.

once removed replace with the new one.

I have a toshiba satellite laptop A135 series and it won't recognize my toshiba external hard drive. However, the drive works fine with my HP

This can be an issue with the USB port, or the drivers.
Is the hard drive a Power HDD ? that means it has 2 usb chords one for power and one for data transfer? coz those might not work with laptops, also has it ever worked with the laptop ?
Thanks

I have a Toshiba A45-S121 laptop. I upgraded my hard drive from a 40GB hard drive to a 320GB Western Digital. Loaded Windows XP and formated drive in FPTS format. The computer rebooted to the hard drive...

Best possible solution put back your 40GB and try to get an external casing for your 320GB to see if it works.And try windows on NTFS instead of FPTS, so reformat your 320GB and install the Windows XP again.
I hope this solution is helpful.

I currently have no os loaded on my laptop....when installing ubuntu/linex on it I continue to get errors... is my harddrive done? Do I need to replace it?

It could either be:
* the CD-ROM drive is mis-reading,
* the CD-ROM media is damaged,
* the hard-drive is mis-writing or mis-reading,
* the RAM in your computer is mis-writing or mis-reading.

Download the free 'MEMTEST86+' software, and burn it to a bootable CD-disk. Boot your computer from the CD, and it will "exhaustively" do a "test" of your RAM.
