If you are hearing sounds on your computer try following this steps to retrieve your volume icon.

1. right click on a blank space on the Taskbar. In the
menu that appears, select 'Properties'. or you can go to your control panel and select Notification Area.
2. Find your volume icon and set it to "Show icons"

if you are not hearing sounds then there's a problem with your sound card driver.

I thing this problem because a SoundMax driver conflict with windows vista.I thing you should update your SoundMax driver (if you have) or if you using the old AVG,upgrade it.

SOURCE: how do i get speaker icon on my toolbar so i can

Hi,
You can right-click in the background (a blank spot) right next to the clock in the taskbar. Then click on "Properties". You should then viewing the "Notification Area" tab of the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties". Make sure that "Volume" is checked under "System Icons". I would also check the other 3 boxes and uncheck "Hide Inactive Icons" at the same time.
Please let me know if it helps.
Thanks
