Question about Craftsman Garden

Open Question

I have a used Craftsman 25 HP, 48" deck, 917.272264. When I parked it in the fall it ran great, although reverse was always hard to push down. Now this spring it started right up and everything works except when I push on the forward or reverse pedals I get this awful undescribable noise and it goes no where. I did notice that the reverse pedal does not seem to return to it's up position very well if at all. All the belts look good and the idler has tension on the belts and moves. I moved the transport bar in and out and it makes no difference, the rear wheels are locked up. Also the cruise lever doesn't budge. Are these all related? Thx Tim

SOURCE: Hydrostatic mower goes in reverse but not forward. Only 73 hrs on it!

On my hydrostatic there is an adjustment on the forward/back lever which can be made to run all reverse or all forward. Normal setting gives both of course. Look at that adjustment. Maybe something let go.

SOURCE: John Deere L120 transmission high pitch noise and no forward move

Try jacking the unit up. Start it up and try moving pushing the forward and reverse back and forth and see if it does it then. It sounds like an oil way in the hydrostatic unit has a check valve stuck. Of course make sure that the fluid lever is up. Hope this will help you. donnyb60

SOURCE: runs but will not go

Hello brookspiercy:

From your Description it Sounds like a New Belt is Required and Possibly a New Clutch Idler Arm or Idler Pulley. The Grinding Sound like it May be the Bearings of the Clutch Idler Pulley.

you may have to reset the wheels on the mower deck to a higher setting. it sounds like the reason it is having a hard time moving is because it is set to low and is bouging down the mower.

There is usually no easy way as the rope goes really tight, The best thing is to use an old bread knife with a wavy edge to cut it off.
The hardest thing is getting to it, if you are up to removing the deck and turning it over, that is the best way.
