Because you have a scale that weighs in whole grams not parts of a gram. You need a more accurate scale like these which weigh to 1/00th of a gram (0.01 grams).

Put the weight on the scale. It should weigh ounces, pounds, grams, and killograms, all in the same unit.

I had the same problem and, suspecting that the metal contacts weren't making proper contact with the batteries, I used a long nosed pliers to gently bend all ten contacts towards to the batteries (there are eight small tabs in the battery compartment, and two on the battery cover). If you don't have a long nosed pliers a small screwdriver should do it if you held the fixed part of each set of contacts so it doesn't detach during the process.
Unfortunately, it worked, but only for one weigh, and then it reverted to "Lo". This happened twice, so I telephoned the Salter Customer Service Helpline (01732 360783) who recommended a reset, which is done by removing the batteries, standing on the scale for 20 seconds, and replacing the batteries. That also only worked for one weigh, so they are looking into it further and I'll post the results here, but in the meantime I hope one of the above solutions will work for others.

I am having exactly the same problem! I am using a WW scale. I am hoping the lesser weights are the accurate ones!

mcdevito75, Most scales have a zero re-set screw or knob close to the weight indicator, if yours does simply re-set to zero with no weight on the scale, it may be a screw or small knob. If nothing than the scale might have to be replaced.
