Question about Craftsman 24 Hp 48" Deck Yard Tractor

1 Answer

On my 2 year old Craftsman garden tractor with a 24hp V twin Intek engine, I have to turn the flywheel counterclockwise to the point of decompression in order to restart the engine...thus far the Sears warranty techs have not solved the problem and will not renew the contract...I am a 69 year old retired combat Marine and do most of my own mechanical work without any problem...but this has me stumped so please point me in right direction...Thanks Hank561

The oil is leaking past the rings while it sits and builds up pressure. You can take the plugs out and crank then put them back in and it will start. Which ever is easier for you. They need to inspect the rings and pistons and replace the defective parts.

What is the compression lbs for a 18 hp brigg/stratton intek engine

Not sure where to get compression pounds for this, but let me refer you to the Briggs website for detailed product specs and power curves.
Intek can be twin or single sylinder.

For Twin....
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/engines/rider-mower-engines/intek-series-v-twin

For single....the are in 1/2 HP ratings but the link is below....
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/us/en/engines/rider-mower-engines/intek-with-xrd-single-cylinder

If further detail is required, I will need the model type and trim found on the valve cover.

I have a 17.5 hp craftsman 42" lawn tractor. I can't keep the battey charged for more than two uses. I need information on how to trouble shoot te system. I also need t find the alternator

My 24HP 42" had the same problem. If your model is like mine, there are two black wires with a yellow connector coming down the side of the engine. Unplug those wires, and with engine running, and a multimeter leads attached to them measure for 15 volts AC. If bad it is alternator, which is located under fly wheel. If good reconnect yellow wires, and test the single red wire with multimeter red test lead connected and black test lead to any engine ground point. Measure for 15 volts DC. My problem was that square regulator that did not convert 15 VAC to 15 VDC. If your tractor is less than two years old, the warranty will cover labor and repair. Also if your tractor's wiring has different color wires, the test procedure may be different.

I have a Craftsman 21 hp, 42" riding mower ~ 10 years old...when trying to start it, it just makes a loud metal noise like the gears are stripped. I'm going to try to remove the starter tonight...will I...

depends on the engine, briggs L-head opposed twins can be viewed by removing the sheet metal head cover near the starter, changing its starter is fun, as one of the bolts is under the flywheel, it can be changed without flywheel removal, with patience. Briggs Vanguard and Intek twins starters are easier to remove, the intek cowling has to be removed to see anything with starter in place but the starter can be removed with the cowling in place, the Vanguard has a few sheet metal covers that must be removed. If you've got a Kohler, starter removal is usually pretty straightforward, take the starter to a local repair shop for a comparison or test if you are unable to determine what's wrong. A decent shop will at least inspect it and show you what a known good starter drive looks like.

Engine piston

SOUNDS like you have done a big end and when the oil gets warm the oil gets thinner and so doesent lub the engine so good and what you can hear is the piston either hitting the head or the bigend worn bearings on 1 cylinder banging on the crankshaft as they have to have oil there to lub and to pressure the bearings while running SO WHEN you get it rebuilt change your oil to a 20W40 in winter and 20W50 in summer and change it every 50 hrs for your own sake.
