sounds to me like they are jerking you and trying for more money, I would check the lid switch components with a meter.

I just took the back off my older kenmore front loader and discovered that the concrete counter weight had come off the drum and fallen to the bottom of the machine. Reattached it and knocking has stopped, lucky it didn't trash the machine as it is normally attached to the top of the drum.

THIS IS TEMPORARY FIX, NOT A TOTAL SOLUTION. jUST TO GET WATER TO DRAIN AND RESET WASHER. , WITH WASHER POWERED OFF, PUSH AND HOLD START BUTTON FOR 4 SECONDS, RELEASE FOR 4, PUSH FOR 4 RELEASE FOR 4 UNTIL THE FRONT ALL LIGHTS UP AND DISPLAYS 88. sOON YOU WILL SEE YOUR CODES FLASHING, PRESS START BUTTON AS MANY TIMES NEEDED TIL NO MORE CODES FLASHING. tHEN WASHER WILL GO INTO DIAGNOSTIC TEST. aFTER THAT I DO NOT KNOW, BUT YOU CAN WASH 1 LOAD OF CLOTHES AND THEN PERFORM DIAGNOSTIC TEST AGAIN. THAT IS WHAT I AM DOING JUST TO HAVE A WORKING WASHER TOO MUCH TO FIX FROM WHAT I AM READING, SO GOING TO BU A NEW ONE ANYTHING BUT KENMORE. gOOD LUCK, HOPE THIS HELPS FOR IMMEDIATE RESCUE.

Look for the technical brochure. Mine was on the lower kick panel taped inside. I would not take off the back panel first. Maybe the top or the lower front if it is a front loader. It tells you how to do diagnostics and what the codes mean.
