Question about Rheem Paloma PTG-42PVN / RTG2-42PVN Natural Gas Indoor

1 Answer

Starting unit very difficult

Model: PTG-42PVN
SN: PJNG 0904P000024
Unit purchased at HomeDepot.
The burner ignites for ~3 secs., goes out then lights again for ~3 secs. then flashes C2-11.
It has always had problems, which I thought were due to a very old undersized gas line from the meter to the house.
This has now been replaced, but the problem still exists and is getting worse.
The gas and water pressure are good, the electrical ground is good, and the vent is clear. The vent is vertical and is only ~18'' long.

I think I may have fixed it =;-)
Disconnected power, gas and water off.
I took the front cover off, then the circuit board cover.
Removed 2 screws holding board in.
Removed quite a few screws holding burner chamber cover. BE CAREFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THE GLASS FIBER GASKET.
Removed screw that holds control panel.
Checked all hoses were okay and well connected to sensors etc.
Disconnected and blew out short hose that checks room pressure, this has a small brass jet in the end of it.
Fasten control panel and circuit board back in place and put the cover back on. Ensure board does not touch anything it shouldn't e.g. on my unit the cable clamp behind, center top, where the board sits was proud and caused the board to bend when screwed down.
Turn water on and power up. Switch faucet on, fan blows for several seconds then shuts down with A1 error, that's expected as front cover is off. Repeat a couple of times.
Power off. Took a toothbrush and cleaned flame rod (right hand side of burner) and spark plug (left hand side of burner). Cleaned burners.
Repeated fan blowing a couple of times.
One of the screws stripped the thread, so I replaced it with a #6 stainless screw and nut. The screws need to be fairly tight as if the cover leaks a) it's dangerous and b) the unit may not work correctly (I think this may have been part of the issue for me).
    Replace front panel.
Turn on gas, water, and power. See if it works any better...
In my case it seems to be working (for now !)

My bad, I described the position of the the flame and ignition plugs the wrong way around !
    It should be:
"flame rod (left hand side of burner) and spark plug (right hand side of burner)..."
Just an update it's still working perfectly =:-)

I don't think it was the thermocouple, as it would nearly always start straight up first thing in the morning. I hadn't noticed this, my wife told me about it during this week !

Check your thermocoupling, because it seems like it isn't sensing the flame.

I have a paloma tankles water heater model #ptg-42pvn i am getting an intermitent error code C4,12. what is the problem?

Copy following link for Rheem-Paloma tankless troubleshoot and error codes:

If unit worked before: Maybe bad PC board. Maybe lack of required yearly maintenance.
Common error codes can be caused by not following maintenance protocol such as cleaning combustion parts, checking gas pressure, checking venting, and air intake, bleeding gas line etc.
Too bad Rheem-Paloma manuals do not show HOW to conduct this maintenance, leaving customer with many unknowns, and no way to oversee that maintenance performed by hired technician is complete, and matches recommended maintenance.
Sell unit on ebay, and install tank-type gas water heater.

Getting a error code C2 82 on PTG-42PVN / RTG2-42PVN Natural gas indoor

This error code will occur for two reasons:

1. The heater has lost its programming and you will need a new programming chip from Rheem. (866) 720-2076
2. The igniter module is located behind the Printed Circuit board and will need to be relocated.

Model PTG-42PVN

According to the symtoms...sounds like you have a problem with the flow control valve. If less than 3 yrs old, contact Rheem Customer Support at (800-432-8373) and they can an authorized tech in your area to service the unit.

If the unit is out of warranty, I reccommend you still call customer support to find a local technician. Unless you're highly technical/mechanical, this is not a problem you should attempt yourself.

Thanks for trying
