How do i get ink cartrige recognized?

I have a Canon mp600 and the large black ink cartridge ran out, however the smaller one all the way at the left is full but I can't get it to use it. I bought a new cartridge and didn't realize it was teh same one as was stil full. I can't find my manual and can't figure out what to do. Can someone help me out?

When that same thing happened to me, I was still under warrantee and called Canon. I was disappointed to find out, when a cartridge runs out it has to be replaced or the printer won't work regardless of the ink level of the others.

Large black ink tank is empty but I cannot activate the smaller

This "photo" printer has two separate BLACK inks -- one using vegetable dyes, and one using suspended carbon micro-dots, in order to get the "best-possible" BLACK colour.

Replace the empty cartridge.

MP600 2 black ink cartridges...

You can't control which ink is used, the smaller one is used mostly in photos and graphics where more shading control is necessary. The large one is the only one used when you are printing plain text documents that call for black type.

Won't print from small black ink tank

The large cartridge is for text and black pictures and the small one is for toning colours so you need to replace it. I found an absolute bargain on e-bay (2 packs of complete cartridges for £12-$18) when a set of origionals are £24 each set.

Compatibility of Ink cartidge.

The MP600 does not use the 40 or 41 cartridges, it uses individual color (and black) ink tanks. But other models (MP190, MP460, MP470, etc) do use these cartridges. The error message you are receiving indicates that the printer does not recognize the cartridge you installed as a valid black ink cartridge. This can mean that either the cartridge is faulty, or that the printer has a problem.
I would suggest trying another new cartridge, and if you still get the same error, to contact Canon for support options if the unit is still in warranty.

Does not recognise the smaller black ink cartridge

This machine is not meant to switch between the two black cartridges. The large one is used when you are using black only, and the small one is used when you are printing in color.

Two black cartridges required??

The printer does recognize 2 different catridges. My understanding is that the smaller is specific to photos,
but the larger is used for everyday text and pages.
I would get the cartridge and then wait to see if the printer
won't print photos when small cardtridge is out. If it does
print, pictures may not be good enough for you.
