Question about Canon PowerShot S2 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

I purchased a new SDHC chip for the camera and the screen says the card is locked and it is not. Is there an interior memory within the camera that needs to be unlocked?

Unfortunately your camera was designed well before the SDHC format came out. Your camera can only use standard SD cards (2GB or less). Sorry, but there is nothing that you can do for that card that will make it work in your camera. But hang onto it. Someday you'll have a newer camera or other device that may be able to use it.

SD reads Memory error locked in camera and computer will not recognize SD chip. Other SD memory chips are recognized by computer. Have moved lock switch up and down and is not in locked position.

Is it a newer 4GB or larger SDHC card, and are you trying to use it in an older (4 years or older) camera? If so, that's your problem. SDHC format only came out a few years back, and older cameras can not recognize them. You'd need to use 2GB or less standard SD cards only. Fortunately, these are very inexpensive these days, and widely available on Amazon if your local stores no longer carry them.

Why does my camera say chipped locked

There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". The most common is trying to use a 4GB or higher SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Other causes include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). Troubleshooting tips for this problem may be found at this link.

Screen says 'card locked' but the card is not locked

Step 1 - Check to see if SD memory card or SDHC memory card's write protect tab is set to "Lock" -
Unlock the write protect tab.

Step 2 - Try another SD memory card or SDHC memory card to see if the problem also occurs. If not, the memory card is faulty, if the problems doesn't go away, the camera is broken.

Purchased new memory card. camera screen said to format card, camera will not format card please isnsert another. new card is kodak 8gb sdhc. it works in a different kodak camera

The DX6490 works with MMC and SD cards. While an SDHC card will fit into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work. Some Kodak cameras can use SDHC cards, but the DX6490 is not one of them. You need to go with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Okay we have a problem, to properly answer this question "we" collectively need to know what make and model the camera is. However one clue to your problem was that you said SDHC and 4gb.

I'm going to give you a diagram on the SD card type lock make sure it's in the correct position (not locked) Also the SDHC is a newer style memory card and 4 gig is a ton of memory for point and shoot cameras.

If the card lock thing doesn't work and you still can't format then I'm going to say that your camera can't handle the memory capacity of the 4gig SDHC memory card.

Don't panic yet, you may be able to go onto the camera manufactorers web site sift through the models and find the firmware updates for your camera. Updating to new firmware editions could open the possibilities of using a larger card.
Here is the diagram hope this is all that is needed.

A 4GB memory card will be an SDHC type. SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

The camera says I need to format my memory card and when I do so the screen reads Filesys errore00100, how can I fix this?

The card may be incompatible.

Memory cards have grown enormously in capacity in the last couple of years, and even relatively new cameras may not be able to cope with the memory size of the newest cards.

SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. SDHC is not backwards compatible.

Loaded new memory card, and screen reads memory card error-memory card locked. Removed new card from camera, nnlocked card, inserted card again, but received same message. Please advise.

I'm guessing you bought a new 4GB SDHC card. Although it looks exactly the same as a standard SD card, the format the card uses is very different. If your camera is more than a few couple years old, it's likely it was designed before the SDHC format came out. Sorry, but a SDHC card will not work with older cameras.
For older cameras, you'll need to use standard SD cards (usually those 2GB or less). But if you really want to use a 4GB card, do a Google search for 4GB SD "non HC", with the non HC in quotes. Believe Transcend makes one.

Sandisk memory card

Has this card EVER worked with your camera? Since you didn't mention the model number of the Canon, it's possible that you have a compatiblity issue here. Most 4GB SD cards these days are actually SDHC cards, which store memory differently (in sectors, like a hard disc drive, rather than bytes, like your main memory). All SDHC compatible cameras also support SD cards, but cameras sold before the SDHC standard was created will not support SDHC memory cards.

There's a chance that Canon has a firmware upgrade to solve this. You would have to look on the Canon USA web site for this, based on the model number of your camera.
