Question about Refrigerators

2 Answers

I have a 2yr. old Maytag Frig.,freezer on top.I cannot get a stable freezing temp. I can set, with the setting control, readings of 4 or 7 with no effect on the actual temp. I bought a freezer thermometer to verify this problem. The lowest reading has been 10 above by vastly reducing or rearranging food positions. Some so called experts claim that Ideal temp. should be between 5 below & 5 above. Soft Ice Cream has been the result of the problem.

Do you agree that ideally the freezer reding must be 5 below or 5 above?

Hi,

If the refrigerator is not cold enough then please check the following and also click on the blue coloured links for more info.

How To Check the TemperatureI have a 2yr. old - 1x1.gif In most refrigerator freezers, the refrigerator gets its cold from the freezer. The evaporator fan circulates air over the coils in the freezer and cold air circulates into the refrigerator through vents. If the vents are blocked or closed, then the fridge will not get cold enough but the freezer will. If neither is cold enough, then the number of possibilities increases.
Lowering the freezer temperature will increase the cooling cycle activity. Setting the refrigerator temperature may have little affect on the cooling cycles because it simply changes the vent opening size. Decreasing the fridge temperature opens the vents more and increases air circulation from the freezer.
The temperature can be adjusted using the controls found inside the refrigerator or freezer. The ideal freezer temperature is about 0 to 5 degrees (F) and about 38 degrees (F) for the fridge.
Measure the temperature by placing a cup of water with a cooking thermometer into the refrigerator for about 2 hours or more. To test the freezer, substitute alcohol or cooking oil.

Goodluck,
Please don't forget to rate the solution.

It could be the control unit, but if it started happening without switching the setting, then it may be a compressor problem.

Clean very well bottom of frigid including compressor, fan and condenser (all in bottom of my unit. Then set both frigid and freezer temperature controls to "midpoint" and never move these from there.

If it is still under warranty, get a professional come look at it if this doesn't help, It will probably get worse and stop working all together otherwise.

Please let me know how this works out.

Good Luck and have a good day

Never set freezer control higher than mid point. Keep condenser clean
all the time (should be done once a year). Temp or refrigerator control
is your thermostat which controls the running time of your compressor.
In most refrigerator the freezer control only controls a door between
the fridge and freezer section that opens and closes to allow more or
less air to pass from the freezer into refrigerator area. If you turn
the freezer control on the high the door will close more which mean the
refrigerator section will get less cold air from the freezer. In most
refrigerator, alway turn freezer control to the mid point or lower.

I have this same refrigerator, also purchased in 2006. Same exact problem. Fridge freezes, starting actually in the water line, you will notice water on door does not work, then top two shelves start to freeze. Lasts for a few days, then prob does not happen again for 6 months almost to the day. I've had this problem for almost 3 years!!! My service tech said to buy another, glitch in this system he can't figure out. Replaced damper x2, control board, and thermostat x2. Not sure what else to do. I hate the thought of more food lost to spoilage!

Maytag freezer don't freeze food or make ice

There could be several things causing the frig to be cold but not cold enough. First check thermostat control and air control. Both should be set in the middle setting for normal operation.Next check to see if evaporater fan is running in freezer. It should be running whenever compressor runs and circulates cold air inside frig as well as freezer. Next check if condensor fan motor is running. It blows air over condensor coils to remove heat. Last ,check condensor itself for dirty coils. If they are matted up with hair dust, etc. it will cause poor cooling. you can give thorough cleaning with vacuum cleaner. Hope this helps

Everything in frig is frozen and it won't turn off.

If the compressor is running non-stop then the temp. control is not telling it that it's "cold enough". If the compressor isn't running non-stop then you should look at the air damper (little window) that lets the freezer air into the refer compartment... if it's stuck open then you will always get cold air pushed into the fridge eventually becoming a freezer in itself.
