SOURCE: squeaking noise when printing
Probably, but you?re going to have to try to isolate the problem a little better. Typically this would involve removing side panels and such; however, you may just have a faulty consumable like a toner cartridge, fuser or more likely the transfer kit. I typically try to isolate the sounds location then try replacing some of the consumables in that area one by one. In your case if you can?t isolate the location I would start with the transfer kit since that has a greater chance of making noise. Let us know what you find out and please don?t forget to rate the posting when we?re done.

The grinding noise is probably related to the carriage moving back and forth in the product. The good news is...it's still moving! :-)
I would recommend reviewing the steps for clearing a 'carriage jam' in the following section of HP customer care. Even though you do not have a total jam, there are some useful steps for checking the carriage path, to make sure all is clear. You can find the info here (I would pay special attention to Solution Three and Solution Four):
For the colours seeming washed out, I might check out the following information on HP's customer care website:
I hope this information helps!

Try moving the rod that holds the rollers and see if that is loose.
If it is then you need to call up hp and either get a replacement or an upgrade printer with a 50% dicount on an upgrade and if your in warranty then yuor printer will be replaced free of cost.
If it is not loose then try cleaning the rollers with a cloth dipped in water and then try to put the paper in while holding it and see if it goes in this will help detect whether there is something loose with the pick mechanism or not.
Then disconnect the power cable from the printer press and hold the cancel and colour copy buttons and reconnect the power cable and then try to print and see what happens.
If all this does not resolve the problem then call hp at 1-800-474-6836 and ask either for a replacement if your printer is in one years warranty if its not I suggest you go in for the upgrade with atleast a 50% discount

This is quite normal with this series of printers. Happens on my 6310. It "machine guns" only occassionally (once a month), and then the gunning noise slows down slowly, then the print starts. Might be shaking the head to clear ink rigorously or something.
