Could be a tough one for someone who isn't in front of your computer.
You could try to get into safe mode. Turn it on and then keep hitting the F8 key until a screen comes on giving you some options. Also you could try inserting the CD that came with it, not to re install, but to just wake it up, then remove it.
Advice would be to buy a back up external hard drive and only use it to back up weekly, this way you have a copy of registry etc.
Hope it works.
One more thing you could try is to see if your memory chips are loose inside the case, sometimes dirt keeps them from making contact with the board's contacts, causes the same thing.

Sorry to hear you're having problems.
As simple as it sounds - remove the cover and blow out the system.
I hear that Best Buy and Staples are giving free check ups. I would check with them for the freebee and not tell them it isn't booting. Just an idea - sneaky in a way but I have had pc's not boot and them after a cleaning boot right up.
This isn't a permanent fix you understand.

Best of it

Our pc is not quite 1 yr old. Yesterday morning it was fine. Yesterday afternoon, when I turned it on it went into ''entering Power Save'' mode on the monitor with the tower fan running high and beeping....

As a former Dell tech, I can say with 99% certainty, there is no "kill switch" on the system. My evidence for that is as follows. If it's true, Dell would face a lawsuit to end all lawsuits. Not to mention all the bad press. Also, computer companies rely on customer loyalty. I've fielded many calls in which the customer says "I've always owned a dell. That's all i'll buy" ....etc. Those people will continue to buy Dell's products and recommend Dell to their friends. Now, if Dell manufactures their products to fail after the first year, word will get around quickly, customers will get disgusted, and those "i love dell calls" become "i'll never buy your stuff again and i'm gonna tell all my friends"...I've fielded calls like that as well. So, it's in Dell's best interest to produce quality systems. What's the use in making money on that repair bill, if you aren't going to buy another system from them in the future?

I hope that helps.

HP Tower (2000 Media Edition)

Sounds like your power supply unit is dead. Do you get any power or hard drive lights on the unit? If not, I'm afraid it's a repair shop problem.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!
