have you try checking your hard drive? if you can go to the dos prompt of the computer or the command prompt. you can check the status of your hard drive by typing these: fdisk /mbr

if there is no error, your hard drive is ok. and if not you need to replace your harddrive.. thank you Syede

I have a sony vaio model pcg-7171l and i have replaced the motherboard, hard drive and battery. i cannot get it to install windows properly, i have tried multiple times....the last time it ran somewh

If you are trying to install Windows XP then -
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

The reason why you cannot install Windows on your hard drive is this model Sony has a SATA disk controller.

Dear, I have a couple of problems with my vaio... I think that all problems are about drivers (orginally installed Vista, I have now Windows 7 64 bits installed). My Vaio model is VGN-AR71S. Keyboard...

Hi..
I would 1`st google to see if your laptop is compatible with windows 7..i,e forums etc..to see if you find any body else has any of these problems..

Try looking on the sony web site to see if they have any updates....or google your make and maodel but after you have put in you model, write in windows 7 drivers....and if you find any drivers you can use a usb external keyboard to install them..

If all else fails you might have to go back to your original operating system or try windows 7 32 bit..

XP Drivers for Sony Vaio VGN-fw230j/b

It's probably not supported Sony.

You can try and downgrade but you might lose some functionality. I downgraded my Vista Gateway laptop to XP but had to spend a lot of time tracking down drivers that would work correctly.

You won't be able to just pop in an XP cd and install. You'll have to jump through a few hoops.

Here's the biggest hoop and guide here:

http://maxeasyguide.blogspot.com/2008/04/preparations-for-winxp-installation-cd.html

Since you have a newer laptop your hard drive uses sata drivers which the XP cd doesn't have built-in.

Let me know if you get stuck or have anymore questions.

Failing install of PCI SATA Drive

You need to load the SATA Controller driver for the XP install to access the HDD.

The driver will need to be downloaded and extracted to a floppy diskette, then loaded during the XP install.

If your system doesn't have a floppy drive, you'll either need a USB floppy drive or create a slipstreamed XP CD with the driver added to the CD.
