That usually means the drive has failed and needs to be replaced. You may have noticed that it was slower and noisier shortly before it stopped. It probably stopped be able to burn dvds, then cd first, then it had problems reading dvds but would read cd's then finally nothing. Thats the typical pattern. Some just go from normal to nothing but thats not as common.

The cd/dvd drive is a simple repair and easily attempted. There is one screw that holds the drive in place on thebottom. Undo that screw and the drive slides out. Push the new drive in and put the screw in and you are done.

You can buy a replacement drive from several places including HP. You want to get it from a third party not HP. HP charges more. You should check to see if you have any warrenty either from HP or the store. they will replace this under warrenty. A replacement drive for this looks to be rather expensive at $200+ even from third party suppliers. Those can be found simply by searching for 'laptop replacement parts' using google or bing. Then looking up your specific model.

That happened 3 times on my computer when it was still brand new! They replaced the drive, and it happened again. It is a registry problem that Itunes causes. Every time I download Itunes, I lose my DVD drive. I have read on the internet that this is an Apple problem that they will not address, but apparently it is not happening all that much with Windows 7, mostly Vista. i was able to get the Drive to be recognized through a few steps that were not all that hard. Dvd not reading

The objective here is for us to determine if the dvd is bad or Operating system is causing DVD not able to detect DVD's or cds

Hardware Issue

1. Try booting the computer from the DVD. Use the windows XP or vista or windows 7 to boot with it
2. If the DVD boots up. Definitely the DVD rom is working because it can read dvds outside of windows proceed to step 4
3. If it does not boot up make sure that the dvd is working on another DVD rom. And we are sure that the dvdrom is bad and needs to be replaced

Software Issue

4. Click start -> Click Run (Windows XP)/ Start Search (Vista) / Search Programs and Files (Windows 7)
5. Type Regedit
6. Click on the triangle/plus sign beside HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE
7. Click on the triangle/plus sign beside SYSTEM
8.Click on the triangle/plus sign beside CurrentControlSet
9.Click on the triangle/plus sign beside Class
10.Click on the Folder {4D36E965-.......}

Note: The first 4 digits might be the same we need the digit that has a 65

11. Restart the computer and your done

Could you please explain the problem a little bit. Are you not able to detect the DVD inserted or the icon for "DVD Rom" in " My computer" is not responding?

If you are not able to detect the DVD ROM in the "My Computer" then To resolve this problem, remove the affected filter drivers. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start , type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in thePrograms list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
  2. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.
  3. In the right pane, if you have UpperFilters, right-click UpperFilters, and then clickDelete.
  4. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.
  5. In the right pane, if you have LowerFilters, right-click LowerFilters, and then clickDelete.
  6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.
  7. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

It should be able to detect the drives now.

My cd/dvd does not show up in my computer

Check your system BIOS whether it is Detected there, if no, Shutdown your system, Press your CD-Rom drive towards the system firmly (Incase its making a partial contact), and restart your system. If Yes, then Start your system, Right-Click on my computer, go to properties, Device Manager, DVD/CDRom Drives. and click on it. if your CD Rom Drive is not detected there, then on the Device Manager Screen, click on Action, Scan for hardware changes, your system should detect it automatically. But if its already there, right-click on it, Uninstall it and do the scan system for hardware changes again. It should solve the problem like that.

I have a Compaq PC and yesterday it stopped recogzning my DVD rom drive. What could be the problem?

There would be serveral reasons for not recognizing the dvd..
-> May be the Problem with the wire not connected properly in the tower
->May be the Problem with Operating System.
-> May be the Problem in the registry with upper/lower filters.

Solutions :

-> Check with the wire properly connected or not opening the cabinet.
check whether the dvd rom detected in bios.
if detected check with rocognizing the dvd rom drive in Operating system.

-> Try Reinstalling the operating system(if detected in bios & not recognised in Operating system).

-> Try editing registry by clicking on Start -> Run ->type regedit and push enter.
->Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Delete Upper filter and Lower filter , and reboot the computer. The optical drive shows up under My Computer.
