My 6400 did up-grade and closed down. It re-booted and is now stuck on WINDOWS VISTA HOME PREMIUM screen. If I switch off and switch on, it just freezes at same place

Start the laptop and insert the Vista installation disc in the dvd tray. Now reboot the laptop with the disc in. When you see the Dell name tap the F12 key to get to the multiboot menu. When you see the menu come up, scroll down to DVD or cd player. The machine will then look at the dvd player to boot from, the disc will be read and you will see this "Hit any key to boot from CD", I usually just hit the space bar, this will start windows files loading. When windows has finished loading its files, it will ask you want to do. Scroll down and choose repair. Windows will search for all the Windows installations on the disc, there should be only one and it will be listed. Click on that and highlight it and click next. Vista will attempt to repair the boot.menu and the boot.ini files. When it is finished it will either tell you it fixed some errors or it will tell you that it cannot fix the repairs automatically. In most cases, the repair will completed and you just have to remove the disc and reboot when it tells you to. If it is unable to repair, it will give you other options, choose restore computer to an earlier time, choose a restore point before the update and click next....I usually go back a couple of days just to make sure, the computer will go through a system restore and back itself up a couple of days before the trouble. Reboot the laptop.

How to reformat the computer?

To reformat the windows vista. There are two options to approach the reformat:
  • Option #1: Boot from the Windows Vista DVD. This is more complicated to do, but it destroys all data and partitions.
  • Option #2: Re-install Vista without leaving the desktop. This preserves the previous installation in a folder called Windows.old. Not all info is wiped, however, and you can't destroy your partitions.
First, restart your system. When the computer starts to boot, look for an option before you get to the Windows screen that reads: “Setup” “CMOS,” or “Bios”. This varies between manufacturers. For example, on the boot screen, it says:
“F2 =Setup”.
The option will flash by quickly so be ready for it and react quickly. You may need to reboot a few times to catch it.
Once in the BIOS, look for a setting that says "Boot" or "Boot Sequence". You might have to dig through the menus with your keyboard’s arrow keys to locate the setting. In the listed as Boot Sequence. And to navigate to Startup, then Boot, and then Boot Priority Setting.
When you find the setting, change your DVD drive so that it occupies the top of the list. The hard drive that contains Windows Vista should be listed as second in the boot list.
And put the Windows Vista installation disc in the designated drive. Now, select the Save Changes and Exit option in the BIOS. The computer will restart and will attempt to read the optical drive you just assigned as the first bootable drive.
The system will use the Windows Vista disc to boot and the reformat and reinstall process will start. But You will need to reinstall any programs that are not bundled with Windows Vista and reinstate your preferences and personal files after reformatting the computer and reinstalling Vista.

Windows Vista Home Premium 64 Switch User or logoff display screen goes blank have to reboot to carry on.

It's likely the default video mode is set to a mode that is not compatible with your card or monitor.

Boot into safe mode and set it to something you know it can support, 1024x768, reboot and then try it.

My PC with Vista Home Premium is caught in a loop

One of the updates is not installing properly. The only thing you can really do in this case is to use your Windows Vista installation disk and try to either repair or restore to a previously known good restore point. Hope this helps.
