Plug in another device that is known to work - like another mouse, USB memory stick etc... and make sure the USB port is working properly - and repost your findings.

    Thanks!!

In Windows, right-click "My Computer", click the hardware tab, click "Device Manager" and expand the "USB Serial Bus" - right click the "USB 2.0 Root Hub", click on the power management tab and make sure the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is UN-checked.

I Hope this works! Good luck!

The next sure-fire test is to try it in another PC.

Im afraid your mouse may be dead.

    Thanks!!

This is a very common problem even though the cord looks fine, it fractures and breaks connection, Whenever there is NO light/LED, then thats what tells us whats wrong. Now, there is not a lot that can be done about it,unless you'r pretty handy, you can get an extension USB cable, and cut the end off, then remove the old cable from the mouse, and resolder on the new one, all the wires are the same color and all simply go where the old ones come off. This should, get you working again. However it may not be the cable, although it usually is, I have had it were the cable was faulty, and that killed the internals of the mouse, also I have had good USB cables and the inside electronics go bad for whatever reason. It may just be easier to get a new mouse.

I have a mouse with a retractable cord, but when I go and try to extend the cord, it doesn't lock in place and it shoots back into the mouse. If you could please help fix this it would be appreciated.

the retractor lock is prob broken cannot rely fix them, would just tie a not in cable and it will not go back in then. pull all way out and tie not in cable so its near to the mouse end. its not a fix but it will work the retractor locks don't last on items flimsy plastic. the pins wear out so don't lock.

My Targus optical mini-mouse with retractable cord just stopped working. There is no light underneath. Does it have a battery? Or is it just bust?

are your mouse is bluetooth or cable?
if its bluetooth, its definitely need a battery. if its cable then your mouse probably already damaged because there is no light from your mouse.

Hey there, my a4 Tech mouse stops and starts, with new baterries! It works fine but then it just konks out! for no reason that I can see! the keyboard works fine, but the mosuye works for 5 seconds, then...

You could try to re-sync it to the receiver and also look at anything that might block the receiver both physically like cords or books or electronically like too close to another electronic device. The phone cord to my multi-line phone actually interferes with the signal for my keyboard.

M trying to fix my retractable mouse. do you have any diagram showing how the insides of the retractable mechanism looks like. much thanks!

Optical mouse from inside: http://www.gadgetrivia.com/photos/o/56422-best_optical_mouse.jpg (this isn't a retractable mouse, but the inside looks exactly the same, only the cord this different which doesn't matter in this situation).
Here are instructions for optical mouse repair: http://www.thenetguruz.com/hardware/diy-optical-mouse-repair/
But if your mouse doesn't work first plug the mouse in the USB slot and check the laser beam under the mouse - if there is no light, the mouse is dead, and you should return it to the seller for replacement. (Such a thin cable of the mouse is very vulnerable and might break easily. More over I find many negative reviews about this rectractable mouse - so if your seller offers to replace it - ask for a different model or test it with your laptop right in the shop before bringing it home.)
2) Here is a solution that already worked for another user, but was very complicated: http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Keyboards-Touchpads/USB-mouse-not-recognized-drivers-can-t-be-installed/m-p/23526
3) Or alternatively download and install a free driver updater software, e.g. http://www.innovative-sol.com/drivermax/index.htm - let it scan and update all your missing drivers - it may fix USB general problems if this causes also the mouse problems.

Retractable Cord won't lock

When fully extended (you have to hold the cord in place since it won't lock), slide the rectractable device down the cord until it is butted up against the USB connector. You can use the mouse with no problems like this. When you are done, slide the retractor back to the middle of the cord and the ends will wind back in. It's not a perfect solution but at least makes the mouse usable.

Power cord will not retract on my Electrolux UltraLux 2000

You will need to take the machine apart to correct this. Open the front of the canister and remove the bag. As you are looking at the front of the unit, there are two vinyl covered strips that run the length of the unit. Pull forward on these strips and then pull out so that the vinyl separates from the plastic underneath. Now grab the plastic strip with a pair of needle nose pliers and pull towards the front of the canister. These can be tough if the machine has never been opened up before, but pull as hard as you need to, to slide the strip out. Once both strips are out, turn the machine over, pull out on the sides of the bottom of the unit, and lift up. The bottom should come off relatively easily, and everything will be exposed. Now, assuming that the cordwinder isn't damaged, you should be able to wind the cord in by hand. Once it gets started it may start to retract automatically. Usually the spring just gets in a bind against the housing when it's over extended, and rolling it in by hand a little will free it up. Good Luck!!

Meile S548. It work turn on expect when I fiddle with retractable cord. Even then, it's prone to stop again. The machine is relatively new and shows no cord wear.

you have a bad cord reel. the cord may look fine but its the contacts inside that have gone bad. i have had some luck with simply adjusting the contacts but probably need to replace the cord reel.

I have an Olympus SP 320 camera, zoom error comes up and it shuts off

I just pulled my 320 out after not using it for 4 months and the lens extended and zoom error began flashing on the screen. After reading a few other post on the net about how much it cost I decided the camera was a goner. For good measure I banged it on my mouse pad a couple times and the lens suddenly retracted and it is now working fine. Doubt it will work very often but might be worth a try. Make sure you hit it on something soft to prevent other damage.
