Question about Cobra 148 GTL 120-Channels Base CB Radio

1 Answer

Hello, I dusted off my old Cobra 2000 GTL and plugged it into the wall and it will not power on. The clock is on and adjustable. It was last working before I boxed it up a few years back. Is this a known problem? Power switch? Please advise. Robin

    I've done some additional troubleshooting and the results are as follows;

    1. hooked up 12v instead of 120v and results same, power to clock but no main power on.
    2. disassembled and hooked up voltmeter to power supply. I get 16 vac on the output of main transformer. I get 0 v from the output of the bridge rectifier, therefore I conclude that the bridge rectifier is bad. Can anyone confirm or deny my findings? I have not had to troubleshoot a power supply for some time and am rusty.

    Thanks for your feedback. The problem got resolved in another manner.

    As I was probing around the power supply section measuring voltages, I moved a wire connected to the output of the bridge rectifier and the system lit up. Cold/old solder joint thing.

Try this, plug it all up and turn it on, let it set over night, then try it, after a radio has been put away for a while, the capacitors lose charge...hope this was helpful....

try adjusting the L36,L38 to the highest reading on the external meter and then adjust VR10 TO 4 watts. If this doesn't cure the problem, you have a weak final transistor. Good Luck

Hello Jim. These radios do not work well with any power mic including the power echo mics because they have good modulation boards in them. But if you still want to try then check http://www.cbtricks.com/radios/cobra/200gtl_dx/index.htm

Cobra 148GTL

Hello k007,

It sounds like you may have damaged the RF power amplifier stage of the CB. Since you were adjusting the antenna characteristics. Did you have a SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) meter connected while you were tuning the unit? If you did you might have noticed the needle go past the 1.2 mark when you were adjusting the antenna or the unit itself. In any event I think that the RF power Amp is shot.

Thank you,
Shuttle83
