Question about Briggs & Stratton Power Products 5,550 Watt Portable Generator #30241

1 Answer

My push mower will start and run but it cycles between running and almost stalling. There is a lever under the air cleaner attached to the carburator with a spring attached. I can move this lever and the mower will really hum if held. I am watching as the mower is running and the lever moves back and forth as the mower runs and then peters out then comes back and peters out. I tried to adjust the spring attached to the arm to give it more force to keep the lever pulled open but this only changed the rpm of the motor to a higher range but did not keep the lever steady. What am I missing or what is the root cause of this problem? Drew

Hello Drew. Your carburator is gummed up. I recommend a fuel additive called seafoam, available at most auto parts stores. Follow the dosage directions on the bottle. Run some of the treated fuel through your mower and it will run like it is supposed to. Joe

When youtry to speed up trac tor stalls out

if your saying that engine idles ok but anything over idle stall out your problem is a clogged carburator , try running some carb cleaner thru it , but most the time i end up dissasembling it and cleaning it !! if your saying that at full throttle the engine stalls out , your pushing the throttle up to far and it's going to cold start posisition (choke)

Hi, i just swapped my elec flymo for a briggs and stratton 35 lawn mower, however when ever i start it it coughs and splutters and wont run for more then 30 secs and is also spitting out oil from exhaust....

if the motor has been on its side the oil has runs out thru the muffler and air filter. briggs are famous for doing that. let it sit overnight and remove the air cleaner and you see is fill of oil. next day take the spark plug and clean it and check the gap then put it back, take carburator cleaner and spray some inside the carburator, check the oil level and start.if it wont start then is time to clean carburator. the air filter if is wet in oil and is the dry type. get a new one.

I can start the lawn mower but it will stall if I press the primer button it will stay going....when it warms up I can get it to run but if I start to mow it will stall

First thing I would check is the air filter. Then the belt that drives the wheels. Open up the belt area and clean. Last I would check the carb. Good luck...Lee

I have a 15hp tecumseh engine that will only run with the choke on.

You have a partially gummed up carburator. Get a bottle of carburator cleaner to add to your fuel. Follow those directions and you should be fine.

The alternate method may be to get a can of starter fluid. Spray the fluid into the air intake as the engine is running with the choke on. When the engine sounds better take it off of the choke status. Joe

Mtd ym 21" starts but wont stay running

Just checked my dad's for same problem. First thought is its not getting gas from tank; line is clean and no holes. On his 22" MTD push, i took off the air cleaner housing to expose the carb. Sprayed carb cleaner in carb throat, checked for smooth butterfly valve action, and also cleaned small jet/opening on left side of carb housing. Put it together and it ran perfectly. Don't buy a kit until you at least try this, its cheaper!

When the mower is started it runs very smoothly. The blow by from engine comes through the valve on side through floor of Carburator housing fouling air cleaner. when air cleaner off oil is sprayed on...

REPLACE THE CRANKCASE BREATHER ON THE SIDE OF THE BLOCK. IT IS A SMALL RECTANGULAR SHAPED BOX AT THE END OF THE HOSE THAT IS ATTACHED TO THE AIR CLEANER HOUSING WHERE THE OIL IS SPRAYING IN

Mower starts, but dies immediately

that's not a choke lever, it's used as a speed control on some models. the two springs are attached to the governor rod, which is attached to an "air vane" governor - on these engines, you need to keep the gas tank fairly full at all times, the dip tube on the carburetor rides up off the bottom of the gas tank, if fuel level goes lower than this tube, it won't pull any gas to the intake - from your descriptions, though, it sounds like the diapragm between the carb and gas tank has "curled". briggs had a service flash on the problem and since it's new, you should take it to a shop that does briggs warranty work - it should be covered under warranty

Husqvarna R53SV Petrol Mower wont start. I think too much oil had been put in. I drained some out bu still wont start. Is the engine flooded? how could i start it? Thanks

Use starting fluid when it does finally start continue starting until all the oil is cleared out of the carburator you may need to repeatedly choke out the carb with the engine running to clear out the carb, do this by removing the air cleaner, start the mower on high speed rpm, and cover the air intake with your hand repeating this start/ choke/ stall procedure until it is cleared out it works, I just did this to a mower last week that had too much oil in it, the mower smoked quite a bit but eventually returned to normal

I put a new gasket and diaphram on my Poulan Push mower. Now it starts and I can manually rev it up and it runs fine. It however will not rev on its own and runs at a very low RPM. What do I do?

Sound like the governor spring needs more tension on it. The end to adjust is on the front right of the engine, under the air filter. You can see it's attached to a lever that you can bend away from the engine to stretch the spring. Caution! Don't bend the tab too much. You dont want to over rev the engine. It's made to run about 3000 to 3200 rpm's.
