Please be sure about system restore or recovery .... if u wana do a system restore it only takes your pc back to a certain date... if u wana do a system recovery you will lose all data on the access system restore follow the sequence

The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

What luck has anyone had with Windows 7 on this machine?

You could try leaving the system restore for a bit longer. It MIGHT get past 99%. However, you can often run into issues with creating the restore disk. If the disk is currupt, there isn't much you can do about it.

Since Ubuntu ran perfectly, there isnt any other problem with the computer. Running a clean install of Vista/7 or even 8 is obviously an option that will work. You will have to buy the product though.
Otherwise, you could stick to Linux. The software center is really good, and getting used to the environment doesn't take too long.

My compaq presario cq57 says it no longer has windows recovery environment is there any way that i could fix this so that i could give my computer a full restore?

I suggest use the Restoration Disk.
When asked choose Full Install. (Destructive Installation)

Don't have the Restoration Disk?

Answering from a USA standpoint. Should cross-over to all countries.

The disk is free. The shipping and handling is not.
$17 for a 5 to 7 day ship, $24 for a 2 to 3 day ship.
Call 800-474-6836
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Have the Serial Number written down, to give to the nice representative.
This is found in the white Service Tag, on the bottom of the laptop.
S/N = Serial Number

For all countries, and the HP Support contact number, use HP Support Worldwide,

If you are not in the US, post the country you are in; and I will find your HP Support contact number, and post the page back in a link.

Need restore disk

You should be able to contact the manufacturer to get assistance. Some laptops come with the restore information hidden on a part of the laptop. To make it work you will have to enter whatever keystrokes they direct you to use and the restore will automatically run. If you do need a specific cd, the manufacturer can also tell you what you need. Depending on the age of the laptop, you should be able to order it from them. If they no longer stock the restore cd's, you will have to get a copy of the version of Windows you want to install and install it yourself. If you are using XP or Vista, the cd should have most of the drivers you will need for the laptop. If not you should be able to track down the drivers on the Intenet.

No, the F8 button only gives you boot options. Do you have the system recovery disks that came with the laptop?

Reset laptop system settings

Do a search of your files and type in System Restore. Then chose factory settings, or you can do this by shutting down the computer and turning it back on and continue to hit F8 until the screen pops up

System Restore disk

is there not a 2nd partition on your computer with the restore files on? If there is try pressing Alt + F10 when the gateway screen appears on boot. This will restore you computer to the factory settings.

Before restore starts it will ask you for a password, this would have been user generated when you first got the computer. If you don't know the password, press enter - maybe you didn't enter one to begin with and this will bypass it, or it may give you a hint as to what the password is. Or just try typing in admin. (if you don't remember your password - I don't know what to suggest, except it may be the same password you use for your user account or did use when you first got the computer.)

I have tried looking for restore disks for you and came back with nothing.

I hope this helps
