Basically, no special driver is needed for a PS/2 mouse on Windows 98SE. Microsoft generic driver, which is bundled with Windows installation should work for you. If it doesn't get installed automatically, choose to select location - and make it search for the driver in Windows installation CD; in C:\Windows or C:\Windows\system32 or C:\Windows\System.

If it fails, follow the instructions written here.

If nothing worked for you, there are 2 options:
1) The mouse is faulty. Unplug it and make sure there are no bended/broken pins in the connector.
2) The PS/2 connector on the motherboard is faulty. It's a common problem of those connectors going bad... Try a different PS/2 mouse to see if you manage to get any PS/2 mouse to work.

As a last resort, use a USB mouse. Again, in this case, the embedded driver should do the job perfectly.

Contact me if you need any further assistance...

Good luck,
Pelu.

PS: When reconnecting a PS/2 device (KB or mouse), a full restart is required for Windows 98 to recognize it!!

OK... So what's the current situation?? Do you have the Windows installed already? If so, you may try retrieve the key using Keyfinder.

Take a look at my tip - you'll find a link to Keyfinder over there...

Once you get the key, you could reinstall Windows if you think it's necessary.

Have you checked your mouse with another computer to make sure it works? Have you tried using other PS2 mouse on your own computer??

Why can't I get a new usb mouse and keyboard to work on a very old Win98SE system that has working usb ports, but the old mouse and keyboard were ps2 connection?

You need to go to the manufacturer of both the keyboard and the mouse web sites and download the windows 98 drivers for both of them and install them.

Did you UN-installed the USB mouse driver in the device manager?

If not to this.

Are you using a USB mouse ?

If yes :) update the driver using the device manager

If no now using PS2 :) update driver using device manager, and select the ps2 mouse driver.

Good morning, I have a windows 98 os, mouse (m-rn67) stopped working. no luck using newer mice, doesn't recognize. can i update computer using usb w/driver for newer mouse?

Hi janettgordon,
I am not exactly sure what you mean by "can i update computer using usb w/driver for newer mouse", but if you want to know if you can update the USB component of Windows 98 I regret to say to you that it's not possible.
USB support on Windows 98 always been tricky and Microsoft never officially supported it before Windows 98 SE. I don't know what version you have, but either way USB support under Windows 98 never been great. You also need to keep in mind that Windows 98 is quite an old system and no recent hardware like mouse, keyboard, printers is supported on it anymore.
My advise would be to upgrade your current Windows installation to Windows XP or Windows 2000. A friend can probably lend you a copy and I'm 100% positive that it will solve your problem with newer mices. You will need to make sure your computer can handle Windows XP or 2000, but they can run under pretty old hardware so it should not be a problem.
Cheers!

Driver for v220 logitech mouse os win 98

Hi

I'm afraid the USB mouses will not work on windows 98, please use the adapter so it fits into a ps2 port. (the old mouse plug) then of course you can check the logitechs website if they offer any drivers for windows 98 but its very unlikely.

Actually I looked myself and the oldest they offer is xp.
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/428/3295&hub=1&cl=us,en

so it would be a good time to buy a new computer, yours must be around 12 years old. considering that 5 year old machine is considered old, your 12year old machine is ancient.

Ps2 port doesn't recognize Microsoft Optical mouse

You might think about a USB hub for all your USB devices. ps2 port is more or less dedicated for mouse, which is why your mouse pointer is stuck in the middle of the screen. Go ahead and get an externally powered USB Hub to power other USB devices. To answer, ps2 for mouse needs just a mouse, not USB device.

Sounds like the driver has become corrupted. You will have to uninstall then reinstall the drivers. Lets start with that, let me know how it goes and we can take it further.

Ps 2 mouse no driver install

Windows has inbuilt driver for all the mouse. YOu dont need to install the driver separately for your PS2 or USB mouse.
The reason why yours is not moving can be
1) Mouse cap/IC gone bad & needed to be changed a new mouse
2) OS faulty (very rare 1 out of 100)

ENTRY IN SETUP

Windows 98 does not support USB and therefore no USB devices will work without a driver.
Why ae you using Windows 98?
If you insist on using a very old Windows operating system then at least use Windows ME, it does support USB devices.
Try pressing the DEL or F10 key when you boot up to get into the BIOS.
