Take the bar off and give it a good clean, get compressed air and blow it into the oil tank, making a seal around it first

There is no oil "regulator" only an oiler with a screw that adjusts the flow, that is found below the saw, and is fit for a slotted screwdriver.

Ms 170 leaks bar chain oil out bottom, no oil on chain

Your clutch drum bearing has gone bad, letting the clutch drum to move around and cut into the oiler behind it, so now it just pumps the oil out that hole. You have to get that fixed to use the saw, otherwise you're going to cause catastrophic damage to the saw very soon.

I have an MS660 and the bar oiler has not functioned on my last take of fuel. is there a way to trouble shoot the oiler problem without taking it into the shop. I hate to loose a weekend of cutting.

Start by removing the bar and chain and start the saw with a full tank of fresh Stihl bar oil.
If you are or have used a low grade oil or used oil you may have worn the oiler out.
Watch for oil to come out of the oil port.
If it does at a steady rate of about 10-21cc per min at 13,000 rpm or about 1/2 oz. per min then the bar is clogged with saw dust and needs to be cleaned.

If oil does not come out of the hole you will need to trace back the problem. the oiler is under the clutch. To remove the clutch remove the c clip that holds clutch drum ,washer and bearing remove those comonents and you are to the clutch. the clutch comes off reverse threads (right to loosen)
The problem is that the engine wants to turn, so remove the spark plug and put something soft in the sparkplug hole like 2 ft of starter rope. the clutch will come off and you will be able to see the oiler gears and hoses. worst case you will need a new oiler which is held on with a few t-27 screws.
Again I stress the point of good oil.
find parts at a local dealer like www.arcolawn.com

Have a stihl MS180 and it is not pumping any oil out of the hole and slot that makes contact with the bar. How do you remove the oil pump?

To remove the oil pump you need the following:
Assembly tool 1123 890 2200 Removing oil pump Puller 1130 893 1400 Installer 1130 893 1500
I would recommend trying to clean out the oiler first.
Please comment on this and tell us what type of oil you were using. There are rumors of wrong oil clogging or wearing the oilers. Was it used motor oil? Thanks Joe

How to replace oil pump in Stihl 018 chainsaw.

The oiler is set in place to a depth premeasured and tough to duplicate without the proper tool. If you use a proper sized bolt 5mm about 200mm long. After threading in till it stops mark the depth with a marker. pull the bolt out and the oiler will be on the end of the bolt.

thread the new oiler on and reverse the procedure.

My recommendation is to see a local service dealer like www.arcolawn.com and purchase the speciality tools:
21 Assembly tool 1123 890 2200 Removing oil pump
22 - Puller 1130 893 1400
23 - Installer 1130 893 1500

After saying all that I would tell you that a dull chain is the number one cause of "oiler problems" because a dull chain will over heat and make it seem as if the chain has no oil.

Good luck
Joe

vote this up if it helped.

How do I replace the oil pump on a Stihl MS170 chainsaw

The oil pump is pressed in from the bottom. There is a special bolt and bracket to make sure the pump is set to the right depth. Your local dealer should bea able to get the tool for you but it will be cheaper to have the shop do the work.

PS it is more common on this saw to have a dull chain act like it is not getting enough oil than to have a bad oiler.
I am gold certified and have been doing repairs since before the ms series. I have only replaced two oilers in that time.

Good luck
JOE

I have a Stihl 16" 012 AVT chainsaw. I cannot get

First thing I would try is wash out the oil tank with a little bit of diesel fuel then run some thinner oil thru it to see if it gets better . I usually leave bar and chain off when I do this.. or if it is oiling but not going down the bar check the bar oil holes.
