Question about Televison & Video
If I understand this correctly it would go off and back on by itself on eventually stay on until it will not do anything now.
Let me know the model number as this is very helpful but I have some suspicions.
If it is a LCD or newer set made in the last few years there is a common problem many develop;
This type of set uses a "Standby" power supply which is up and running 7/24 and many of these sets they cut corners and use cheap filter caps in this supply.
The only way to tell if this is your problem would be to open the set and follow the power cord to the power supply. You are looking for any of the caps (see attached photo of what they look like) that are puffed up on the top.
The top should be perfectly flat and is silver in color.
I have seen and fixed a lot where several caps failed in the supply--cheap parts and if the problem a fairly inexpensive fix and usually a do it yourself job.
Please get back to me with as much info as you can so I can assist you.

More likely it is Power Supply Board. You need to Open the TV. Make sure it would be Unplugged. You need to Take all the Precautions. Locate the Power Supply Board. Remove the Connectors and Pull out the Board. Once you Pull out the Board, with the Help of Magnifying Glass, locate Cold Solder Joint. If Everything is OK, then you would Locate Bulged / Leaked / Swelled Caps. They would have Ammonia kind of Odor. You need to De-Solder them. You could take the same to Radio Shack / Fry's / Order Online. Once you get the New Caps, Solder them and it is all set.You also need to Check Fuses around that.
Getting a Service Manual for this Model could be tough, but i would be able to ask few vendors, in case problem would not be resolved. Usually, you could easy repair the Power Supply Board, if you could catch Few Bad Caps.
Note - I am Assuming that all the Cords and Connections are Fine.
Let me know,once done.
Hope i helped you.
Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!
