Good day,
The normal settings on any refrigerator is half way between the the lowest number (warmest) and the highest number (coldest).
In your case that would be 3 1/2.
However, on your model 4 is the setting most often used.

Top of fridge freezing with temperature on lowest setting

You need a new thermostat but there are some things you can check in the link. 1 is the warmest setting.

Most refrigerator temperature settings are controlled with a dial or slider. They are sometimes labeled 1 through 5 or 1 through 9. If you are not sure what to set it to, then set it somewhere in the middle. If the dial is numbered 1 to 5 set it on 3, if the dial is numbered 1 to 9, then set at 4. USUALLY the higher the number on the temp control dial, the colder the temperature your refrigerator will get. If your drinks and food are not as cold as you like, set the temperature dial up one number higher. If it is at 3 and you want your food colder, set it to 4 and test 12-24 hours later to see if your food is at the temperature you want.

Refrigerator freezing food

Let's start at the easy part. The thermostat should be set mid range if a dial thermostat. For example, if scale on thermostat is 0 to 9, set to 5. This is the most common problem and solution. If refrigerator is frozen, you may need to defrost unit by turning off and let thaw until unit is defrosted.

If you have a refrigerator with a damper, the damper could have broken off and the circulation fan in the freezer is circulating cold air continuously. To get part go to searspartsdirect.com with make and model number and get drawings of various systems. You can order parts and get them them in couple of days.

Hope this helps!

Fridge not cold enough

The higher the number the colder the temp is supposed to be.

In order to prevent the formation of bacteria and other such organisms to affect food the way it does, the ideal temperature range of refrigerators has been mentioned here. Before we look at these settings, it is important to know the format in which temperatures are represented within a refrigerator. Commonly, you will notice a dial representing the figures 1-5 or 1-9 in the refrigerator, and a dial representing the letters A-E in the freezer. The ideal setting is usually in the middle of such figures.

If the dial is in such a format in your refrigerator, try a setting at 3 if the range is 1-5, and at 4 if the range is 1-9. For the freezer, a setting at C is suitable.

The ideal temperature in the refrigerator ranges between 34 degrees F - 38 degrees F or 1 degrees C - 3 degrees C. So that foods such as vegetables and fruits remain fresh and crisp, the temperature may be set around 38 degrees F or 3 degrees C.
The ideal temperature in the freezer ranges around 0 degrees F (-18 degrees C) or lower.

How to adjust temperature

Hi, Please use your thermostat to adjust your temperature setting. Most refrigerator thermostat is come with actual temperature setting at thermostat dial but it just use range : cold-medium-off ( or 5...5..3....1..0). So for instance to get your refrigerator colder just set between medium - cold. If your thermostat defective , your refrigerator will work unpredictably. In this case you need to fix or replace the thermostat.

My GE TFX30PP is constantly running and doesn't turn off. The freezer is very cold but the frig side isn't cold enough. A repair guy put in a new "cold contol" sensor but it didn't help.

This is a very common issue, If the freezer compartment is cold and making ice the
problem is simply airflow from the freezer into the refrigerated section.
Typically when one senses the refrigerator is warm they max out the settings
on both dials the thermostat with its 1-10 settings as well as off for the compressor.
This controls the compressor and temperature.
The additional setting or dial is for colder freezer or refrigerator as well , However
it simply opens or closes a flapper door between the freezer and refrigerator boxes.
When that dial or setting is maxed , it closes and makes the freezer colder, yet leaves the refrigerated section starved for sufficient airflow to maintain a cold box in the refrigerated section.
Just set the dial that does not turn the compressor off to the middle setting.
One can leave the thermostat that does control the compressor in the max setting , just not the colder freezer setting, If you notice colder isnt colder refrigerator, Its actually colder freezer, A common issue found on 25% of all refrigerator calls a simple setting adjustment.
Its easy to think that maxing out the settings makes for a colder refrigerator, it doesnt, it makes a colder freezer and warm rerigeration section.
If a freezer is making ice, theres nothing wrong with the unit other than airflow setting.
I would also clesan the condenser coils off.

Our 3 months old refrigrator will get so cols that freezes food products.

There are actually 2 cold controls on refrigerator-freezers. The main control is within the refrigerator cavity, the other is located in the freezer cavity. The one in the freezer is usually only a cold air deflector. It takes the cold air that is produced and divides it proportionally between the freezer and refrigerator sides. Set the control in the refrigerator to about mid-range. Set the control in the freezer to mid range. That is your starting point. If the freezer is not cold enough, adjust the freezer control. If the refrigerator s not cold enough, adjust the fridge control. After any adjustments, you MUST wait at least 24 hours for the temp to equalize before making any more adjustments. It may take a week to get it set right. This is true for all refrigerator-freezer combinations. Be patient.

Frigidaire FRS6HR4HW: Refrigerator Design Flaw? It's too warm!

Your refrigerator has 2 thermostats and an electrically controlled air damper. If a technician removed the air damper and someone has not replaced the thermostat for the refrigerator side I believe you have a poor quality service tech and if your refrigerator was worked on with someone with an ounce of a brain they surely would not leave the electrically controlled damper out and would not overlook the possibility that the thermostat probe is defective. Your refrigerator would be an easy fix if the people that were working on it knew what they are doing. You have a minor problem with your refrigerator and a major problem with the technician. The temperature control does not regulate well, the compressor seems to run excessive and the food gets very cold. setting range is 1 to 5, I set it at 1.5 and it still gets the food very cold

Sometimes when the thermostat goes bad it stays on all the way and sometimes the thermostat will say its too cold. If I knew the model number I could tell you the part number. Sea Breeze

Warm refrigerator

First, I think it’s important to know that the Ref side has no cooling coils, it’s basically a box and the cold air in the freezer is blown over by a fan through a channel into the Ref side. This channel has a door which regulates how much cold air goes through. You probably have two control knobs in the Ref side, one controls the temp with numbers 1-9, 9 being the coldest. This temp control tells the compressor how long to run. The other control is for that little door and it may have letters A-E, E being the coldest. If you set it on E (coldest) then this will close that little door and keep most the cold air in the freezer.

Now, why is that cold air not getting over to the Ref side?
1. The little door is not open.
check your control setting. You should be able to feel air coming through the channel on the Ref side.

2. The fan in the freezer is not working.
You can hear this fan running when you open the freezer.

3. The coils on the freezer side are clogged with ice which won't let the fan circulate the air over to the Ref side.
This is a failure of the defrost system.
You can manually defrost for a temp fix. Turn it off, take everything out of the freezer, use a hair dryer to warm the back wall. Do this for as long as you can before anything starts to thaw. Put everything back in, turn it on and this should last a couple of days.
