Question about SimpleTech Signature Mini 160GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Dark Blue Blueberry

My 300GB simple drive external hard drive shows up on my mac, and all the files are there, but it won't let me write to it any more. It is nowhere near full, and I have written to it before. I can copy files off of it, but not onto it. What do I do?

I checked properties and it says I can only write to the drive. Before that I had tried to copy some pictures to it and it said it was "unable to create" the file I needed.

  • camerontyler May 08, 2010

No, I even copied a picture from the drive to my desktop, then tried to move it back, just to see... no joy.

  • camerontyler May 08, 2010

I can try that. It's actually on a Mac, but the concept should still work.

Blah, stupid question about this folder, of course you can't.
If you have such possibility. The easiest sollution and almost guarantee it will work.

Copy all files from this ext HDD on your local pc and just format this HDD using windows formatting tool (right click on this HDD in my computer -> Format...)

pick NTFS of course

Leave rate if I helped you, thanks!!

My windows XP OS won't recognize my SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 300GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

I found that often, external hard drives just don't have any active partitions and thus don't show up in Windows. Go into the control panel, administrative tools, computer management and then the disk manager and see if it has a partition. If it's just unallocated space, right click and make one.

My hard drive quit showing up on my mac desktop and i am not able to access any of the files. the red light still turns on when i plug it in but thats it. i tried plugging it into a pc to see if it would...

It sounds like the hard drive died.. If it won't show up on two different operating systems, then it's more than a simple computer reboot. You may want to try a local repair store and see if they have any luck backing up the drive.

I have unplugged my maxtor 300gb external hard drive from one pc and have plugged into my laptop to transfer data. Light goes on but doesnt seem to be showing up on laptop 'My Comp'

you might want to try to unplug to HD's power and plug it back in then plu the USB into you computer....make sure that you remove the usb safely and not just unplug it.

I have a 500g external simple drive. i am getting a message that i can only read on my mac.

Copy all the data onto your Mac computer.

Take the external drive to a PC computer, and "reformat" it, using "quick format".

Take the external drive back your Mac computer,
and write all the "saved" files onto the drive.

Erase and reformat to be compatible with new mac

Think I might have solved it myself. Here's how:

Open Disk Utilities and select the external hard drive. Select the "Erase" tab. Hit "Erase" at the bottom right.

That's all. Just dragged a folder onto it and it worked.

Maxtor 300GB--can't delete or write

You didn't specify if the original PC was Windows or MAC.

Is this USB external used on a PC with Windows? If so is it formatted NTFS? If so, Mac OSX and pretty much everything else but windows NT, 2k and XP can not write to NTFS. OSX and Linux will read an NTFS partition but at this time not write to it. If your drive is formatted NTFS, I would say, go to a windows machine and convert it to a FAT 32 Partition. Most everything will both read and write to FAT32.
