Question about Mitsubishi WD-52631 52" Projection HDTV

Outer screen scratch

I recently changed residences and in the moving process someone scratched the outer protective screen on my Mitsubishi WD-52631 52" DLP TV. Does anyone know how or where I might get a replacement. The local TV Repair shop (authorized Mitsubishi repair) said that Mitsubishi had discontinued the replacement part. That seems wacko to me since the TV is less than a year old. THe part number they gave me for the screen is 491P199030. Any ideas on how I can get a replacement part, or failing that, if there is any way to "polish out" a scratch?

    zzedly,

You certainly seem to have found the part number at Sears. What's worrisome to me is that the Sears part number is Part# KITSCRNLEN65, which sounds like a 65" screen description. I am starting to wonder if the repair shop looked up the wrong part number.

Clearly, the Mitsubishi site doesn't list a replacement.

By the way, if I hit the accept button, do I have to pay again if I keep checking for answers or do the answers just stop?

    Thanks,

After i tried to get to the service technician folks to ask them to verify only to find that they were gone for the weekend, I went to servicedocs.com and downloaded the parts/repair manual. In short, the experts at the TV shop blew it. The part number they gave me was indeed for a 65" screen not a 52" screen. The right part number according to the manual is 491P199050 NOT 491P199030. Unfortunately, when I use the correct part number at Sears, it reports DISCONTINUED. Given the fact that this TV is only 10 months old, I sent a searing demand for a solution to Mitsubishi. It is tragically irresponsible to discontinue repair parts for high-ticket items less than a year out.

    Resolved.

After much back and forth with Mitsubishi and the repair shop, I got a message from the Mitsubishi Service department.

It says, "The part number for that screen is kit-screen/lens 52. It comes as a set with the rear screen attached

    MDEA Service (MF)"

I thought I would share this response as it may be helpful to you in the future when giving advice. Apparently, Mitsubishi no longer sells just the lenticular screen but does sell a unit that is the screen and freznel lens already assembled. You may also wish to share this with your colleagues. :-) Have a nice weekend. With this information, the service technician was able to order the correct part and I will have the set fixed by next Thursday.

This place says they carry it (not stocked) for $478.

Also, SearsPartsDirect.com seems to say they have them in stock for $250.

You may be right. I don't know that I'd feel comfortable ordering it from Sears Parts without confirming that it's made for your 52". Your best bet may be to confirm the part number with the repair shop, then search the Sears Parts Direct website for that part number. Having the p/n of the screen will be the key to finding anywhere (online or not). I wish I could help more!

As for the premium answer, if you accept it, it will show as "solved", but I believe people (you and experts) can still write comments. If you don't accept any solution (or make any comments, I'm not sure which) for 7 days, the system automatically assumes it's solved.

    Good luck!

To put it lightly, that sucks. I wholeheartedly agree that a manufacturer should support their product for decent amount of time (3 years?) before discontinuing parts. Unless the screen has been discontinued because a newer/better/upgraded screen (with a different p/n) has taken it's place, your options may be limited to scouring the world for a broken TV of the same model that you can salvage the screen from.

P.S. I doubt the scratch would covered under the TV's 1 year warranty, but what if you did have a warranty claim with the screen? Mitsubishi would have to do something, if they can't replace the screen, wouldn't they? Replace the whole darn thing?

I supose its possible, il look into it right now.

that link got messed up also

    so try this http://www.mitsuparts.com/ instead.

It would be nearly impossible to properly polish out the scratch and not
have any visible damage. When polishing, you will also be removing any
    anti-reflective coatings.

There are polishing compounds that will work with Plexiglas, but on most
plastics, they may cause hazing or cloudiness. For an optical surface as
like on a TV screen, this is not practical to polish out. In any case, you
will end up having to replace the screen to fix it properly.

  • Ekse Mar 27, 2008

So I see only two solutions

    1. replace

    2. live with it

  • Ekse Mar 27, 2008

Heres what I found from coolguys links

    http://www.partstore.com/Model/Mitsubish...

and noting from the other site.

  • Ekse Mar 27, 2008

    I just have to add,

500 USD for a scratch is too much!!

The screen shield of my mitsubishi HD 1080 diamond projection tv is scratched and shows rainbow color dots in some places. What can I do? Can I fix it? Replace it?

The outer screen on most models is clear and called a protective screen and prevents glare---if it has that it has 2 more screens behind it.

Getting at the outer on is not so easy---the entire frame for the screens has to be removed, the inner screens removed to get at the outer screen to remove it (if 3 screens you can do without the outer one except if it got scratched before--next will be the next screen behind it.

Check with mitsubishi to see if the screen that is damaged is available or not.

Where can I get a replacement plactic screen cover

This set has 3 screens---the outer one is really only for glare--clear plexigalss--no longer available from Sony.

Sony 4-070-602-01
SCREEN, FRESNEL Sony 4-064-343-11
SCREEN, LENTICULAR Sony 4-058-894-11
SCREEN, PROTECTION (CONTRAST)Outer one is (Contrast) the other two inner ones are showing as available and about 180 each.

You would have to either have someone dismantle or do it yourself---most of these sets you have to remove all three screens from the rear of the set---then remove the outer contrast one if it is scratched or cracked--

If you get it out and measure it: It is possible you may be able to find a company who can cut you a plexi-glass piece to replace it with--lots of work to do this and you have to use extreme care when you remove the two inner screens--easy to damage them---Usually the inner two are taped along all the edges to keep dust etc from getting between them and the front one is a short distance forward of them.

The front protective screen is really only there for glare and to protect the inner screens from damage---I have seen people who had a cracked outer one just dismantle and remove that one---put the others back and use the set that way---have to be careful as the inner screens are easy to scratch or damage with the outer one removed.

Also---I have seen several where someone removed the outer one and got a piece of plexi glass big enough to put on the outside of the front of the set---secured all around the edges with velcro--does not look as good as the original but prevents glare and protects the inner screens.

If this told you something you did not know or helped you rate this solution as I do this here for free.

Scratch in sreen

By the looks of that picture, it's hard for me to believe that the scratch is not on the outside of the protective plexiglass screen. However, you can remove the protective screen w/o negative effect of the picture. In fact, it will probably reduce the glare from light on the screen. If, in fact, the scratch is still seen w/o the protective screen installed, then it is the lenticular screen that is scratched.
The lenticular screen is the one with the vertical grooves from top to bottom in it. The fresnal is the back screen that appears to have been lathed in a circular pattern.

There is a product for polishing platstic that removes minor scratches. I don't however remember the name of the product and if you do obatin it try it in the corner of the screen first to verify it won't do further damage to the screen.

Scratched tv screen

I replaced the screen on my 62 inch projection TV for about $50 and the the picture quality is good! Have a sheet of plexiglass cut to the EXACT size needed. BEFORE installation it MUST be frosted on both sides by either a fine particle sandblaster or by sanding it VERTICALLY on BOTH sides with a power sander and a fine grade paper.
If this is only an OUTER protective screen and the image is projected on the inner screen then DO NOT frost the replacement screen, just install it.
