Most RAM today, is plug and play, would you know the specs of your motherboard?

Installing RAM, is something you should get someone at least semi experienced with Hardware to do, if you are then open your case, and you will notice 3/4 slots, one or more of these slots will be filled with RAM already, Providing you have enough empty slots for your new RAM, you can leave the existing ram installed or remove it - your call.

There are many helpful images here

It is basically inserting the RAM, the correct way around and clip it in. In the case of Installing another hard-drive or replacing your old HD, you will have several cables, The main ones are the power, and data pathing cable. Illustration here

Be careful not to disrupt any other devices/cables inside the machine and it should be good to go.

NO ! I would like to know if I can install a

You can put whatever size hard drive you want in your pc....typically they do not come with operating systems on them when you buy them...they are blank....you can run it as a secondary drive with the one you are already running and use it for storage....Otherwise you will have to have xp installed for you....(more money) . You can not put 600 GB of memory or ram on a pc.....most pc's take up to 4 GB of ram....If you literally mean memory than that will be whatever size hard drive you purchase...Ram is random access memory and helps determine the speed of your pc. And yes it is always worth it to upgrade a pc, depending on how old it is.

Mixing Memory

You can't install two RAMs with different MHz on a single motherboard. Sometimes it works but, usually one of the RAM gets busted. This is based on my experience though.

Acer Travelmate 290 model CL 51 How much Ram can I put in and continue to see a marked improvement in speed? It has 500 MB at the moment.

What operating system are you running?

If it is Windows XP you can go up to 4GB. More with Vista.

However 2 GB should be sufficient and you will notice a spike in performance and load times.

Bigger hard drive

I'm not sure if the motherboard supports SATA drives, so your best bet is getting any IDE (ATA) hard drive. It's up to you which kind you want. I've always been partial to Western Digital and Seagate.

If you are running Windows XP then you shouldn't have a problem with having a larger hard drive, I know Windows 2000 had some issues with them that required registery editing.
