Briggs wont start despite: new ignition, new plug

Hello,

I'm about going crazy now as it seems I've tried everything possible to get some spark out of an old Briggs (I bought in non-running condition on a tiller)

I put in a new Magnetron (installed correctly), new plug, starting fluid in the carb, addition groun wire attached from engin block to frame of tiller....But I don't think I'm even getting spark. I get a few put, puts at most and that's with the starting fluid.

Any ideas on what the deal is?

The magnetron I bought came with a key, and I replaced it when I put in the magnetron. Unless it's possible to get the flywheel back on and somehow mis-align it even with a new key...?

I'm getting no spark at all (pulled the cord in absolute darkness holding the plug against the block and then almost touching the block. If I hold my thumb against the plug hole I feel decent pressure, and also coming out of the exhaust.

Sounds like you may need to pull the flywheel and check that the flywheel timing key is not sheared

1994 Honda Accord ex - Cranks, but won't start! RPM gauge is freaky!

Hello
The engine and automatic transmission in this vehicles drive train are fully electronically controlled by a computer called the PCM (Power Train Control Module). Whenever a problem like this occurs the computer stores a record of the problem (there are of course some exceptions to this, like the fuel pump, engine coolant temperature sensor and MAF sensor for instance) in the form of a fault code in its memory, to read these fault codes you must have the systems memory scanned with a special tool. Once the fault code(s) are read you then must perform the appropriate diagnostic testing to find and resolve the problem(s) DO NOT REPLACE ANY PARTS UNTIL A TRAINED TECHNICAIN HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM TO AVOID SPENDING YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON PARTS THAT MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM

Briggs 20 hp engine runs rich and backfires

Backfiring and running rich? It sounds more like the engine is running lean. Your problem sounds like a fuel problem rather than an ignition issue. However, did you by any chance strike a rock or something solid while mowing? The reason I ask is because you replaced the flywheel key. Another possibility is that the crankshaft has been bent and that could also cause the problem you are describing.

it sounds like a fuel starvation problem it is very possible theres a blocked vent in the carb. the carb will probably will need rebuilding not very difficult

5 HP DID RUN THEN DIDNT

Try new spark plug, fresh fuel, and new air filter. If you have hit something with the blade it may well have sheared the flywheel key knocking the ignition timing out.

I HAVE A 18.5 HP. 42 IN. CRAFTSMAN RIDING MOWER WITH A BRIGGS ENGINE. I HAVE REPLACED FUEL FILTER, FUEL LINES CHECKED CARB (LOOKS LIKE NEW), CHANGED PLUG, NEW FUEL, CHANGED AIR FILTERS, CHANGED OIL AND...

Hello,

Definitely sounds like a thermal issue, likely with the ignition module.

Try this: Wait for it to cool, then start it up again. Run it as you normally would, and wait for it to die. When it does die, pull the spark plug boot off the plug, use a spark gap tester, and see if you still have spark. If you don't, then suspect the ignition coil, perhaps the disable wire might be grounding out as it snakes around and eventually to the off switch.

If you still have spark, then check the fuel shutoff / anti-diesel valve (if equipped) on the bottom of the carburetor bowl. Look for damaged wiring. When you turn the ignition on, and try to start, this valve should have 12 volts going to it to allow fuel to flow. Otherwise, look for problem between valve and on switch.

Another area to check, especially if it tends to backfire, is that the woodruff key (shear pin) on the flywheel isn't damaged (partially sheared).

Cant get my lawn tractor to start

IT COULD BE IGNITION SWITCH IS BAD, I REPLACED ONE ON A CRAFTSMAN THAT DID THIS,BUT ALSO COULD BE A SAFETY SWITCH IS NOT CLOSED PREVENTING STARTER FROM OPERATING,---WITH THE IGNITION SET TO ON CROSS THE TERMINALS ON SOLENOID AND SEE IF IT STARTS THE TRACTOR RUNNING, IF IT FAILS TO RUN ITS PROBALY THE IGNITION SWITCH THEN.
