My Maytag MBB2256G needs a new compressor (so I'm told by a repairman). Is this difficult to replace?

    Good day,

It is by far in terms of expertize the most complex repair on any home appliance by a factor of 10.

The quality of the replacement is far more important than the price. Any refrigeration service man who brags how fast he can replace a compressor is a loser.

Not cooling or freezing

Do you hear the compressor kick on, or try to kick on?If not, unplug the unit, remove the "overload relay" from the compressor and give it a shake. If it rattles, it is burnt out and needs to be replaced. Here is the new part.

If the "overload relay" is good, check to see if the "defrost timer" is stuck in the defrost mode. You can take a flat-head screwdriver and turn the timer til it clicks and it should start the compressor.
Keep me posted!

My maytag fridge MSD2957AE quit working. No ice up problem. a repairman thought it might be a relay before the compressor. he says this is a common problem

The repairman should have told you there are several things that can cause this. However.. the troubleshooting process is this for an in home tech:

Swap out PTC relay & the KliXon thermal overload (mated together on the compressor)
Check the run capacitor. Test compressor resistance while PTC and thermal overload are removed. Tech will read terminal R to terminal C and terminal S to terminal C (winding checks). Then the tech will read R, S and C to compressor case looking for a ground (none allowed)
After that comes the dynamic test..... it should run if the compressor is ok.

IF it does not run at this point the tech will start checking temp controls and do power readings to the compressor. That is pretty much the basic troubleshooting process.... However.... IF the compressor just attempts to start but never starts.. the tech will do a LOCKED ROTOR amperage check. If the rotor is LOCKED... your looking at a compressor change that can run $375.00 and up with the cost of the service call, labor, coolant and lubricant.

The repairman was correct in saying that the PTC relay is a common problem. He just did not tell you the whole story.

At least now you know what to expect.

My fridge electronic panel turned off and the inside started to condensate (aka warm up). I unplugged the fridge and then re-plugged after 15 seconds and everything came back on after 1 minute. I am...

The problem sounds to be power supply related .. To the electronics I mean... Just check the plug is firmly in the wall. If so , could be a termination problem to the board... I.e loose pc power connection on board.. This problem is not mechanical ..

I have a maytag bottom freezer stayle the refrigerator seems to be working ok but freezer is not working seems to be kicking on and off every min or so

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...

Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

Maytag MBB2256G -Refrigerator not cooling , Frezzer is working, defrosted about three weeks ago, worked fine for 3 weeks - now same problem?

Check to see if you can start a defrost cycle bu doing the following:

In the fresh food compartment (CENTER OVERHEAD ) about 6 to 7 inches from the front of the cabinet there is a circular disc with two tabs that will be sticking down. Using a large flat bladed screwdriver rotate that disc in the direction that the tabs allow you to rotate it until you hear a click.

Once the click is hear the compressor and evaporator fan should shut off and the defrost cycle begins. In about 45 minutes to an hour the cycle should terminate with the compressor starting. The evaporator fan may or may not start right away. (normal)

Each time you encounter a defrost problem this is how you maunally start an automatic defrosting cycle.

Other than a wiring problem, this can be caused by a bad defrost timer (Item 13 )

an open defrost element (Item 15)

Or an open 60 deg bi-metal thermostat

Item 30 of above link.... attached to the evaporator tubing (not shown in link other than Part number listing)

These are the most common defrosting problems. It does not rule out a wiring problem.

Defrost timers often hang up when they fail and no longer automatically advance via the timer motor. Hence the prime suspect here is the defrost timer assy. (first link)

Thanks for using FixYa.

Fridge is not cooling

A failed start relay could be the culprit. The relay/overload assembly (12555902) and the run capacitor (C8931612) should be replaced.
Be sure to unplug the refrigerator prior to service.

Refrigerator noisy after compressor replacement.

There may be too much refrigerant in the system. If he did not use a vacuum pump before adding freon, then air is in the system but does not cause a gurgling sound, it just won't cool properly.

Washin machine not spinning

Your repairman is correct. The problem is a rusted spin bearing just under the tub. It is only in use during the spin cycle. Parts are about 50-70 bucks but it's a very difficult job and out of the range of the average do-it-yourselfer. Try to use the machine almost every day to prevent the bearing from freezing up. That way you can get a few more months use out of it before replacing it. If it does freeze up, try to turn the basket manually. It won't move much when its stopped because of the brake. Your repairman probably turned it during the spin cycle by defeating the lid switch.
