Question about Olympus FE-280 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Lens not working

When I turn on the camera, the lens opens but then makes a clicking sound. The screen appears black. If I change the setting I see a blurry picture. The focus doesn't work and I can't magnify anything. Then the camera will close. The Play button works and I can see my past photos, so it is not the battery or the viewing screen. What's wrong and is there anything I can do.

When I turn on the camera the red light blinks and the lens opens all the way, tries to readjust, the sound is like ehhhhm click click. The screen will show a picture if i change the mode, but the focus is blurry and the zoom button does not work. It can take a photo, but then it will shut down, and the photo is blurry.

I did touch the lens, and try to clean it, in case that was the case, but according to the graphics, it is stuck on max zoom.

I have never tried fixing a camera myself before. I will try to do this when I get back from my vacation. Thanks for your thoughts. I will let you know if it works.

Did you try to clean the lens these days?

    FIKRET UNALIR May 11, 2010

I think you have touched your lens mistakenly so the lens mechanism is not its own place now. If this touch was hard then some parts of this mechanism had been broken. When you open the camera does it open noisy?

Lens not working - 662a046.jpg
How to put the lens mechanism of the camera to its own place?
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove your battery and memory card.
3. Unscrew the screws and open the back cover of the camera.
4. Unscrew the screws of the main board.
5. Remove the lens mechanism.
6. Be careful not to touch the rear part of optic parts for protecting to the fingerprints and not to cut the wiring system.
7. Take out the lens mechanism and watch the lens roads. Is there any broken parts around there? If not it is a good news. Then go on to look carefully around the lens mechanism. Is there anything looking unusual? But if you have unusual noise that has two meanings.
a. There is a dust in the lens mechanism. Then it is very easy to fix it. In this position you should give a pressured air to clean it. And collect the camera parts together.
b. There are some broken parts in it. Then there are two solutions.
(1) Give pressured air to clean it. It is easy and does not need to change any part. Go on from 8.
(2) Lens mechanism needs to be changed. Buy new lens mechanism or find it from one of second hand and out of order cameras. Go on from 8.
8. If there is nothing looking unusual, take the lens mechanism to your hand. Then control its move while sliding it slowly and carefully.
9. Collect the camera part as you have unscrewed.
10. Install the memory card and battery.
11. Turn on the camera. Try to focus on any subject specially on the mode that you recently faced with.

Where can you buy a new lens mechanism and how much does it cost?
1. If you need to change the lens mechanism, then you can buy it from
2. Open this address and write to the search box the item number:170482444552
3. You can see the price of this item there. If it is suitable for you then buy it and change it as I said above.

I hope it is helpful.

Your lens mechanism is not in its own place. So the blurry pictures are normal. Please read my instructions and make your camera to be fixed. If you have any experience doing such things then you can do it yourself. Try to fix it. But I have written the solution. Please vote it so I can go on to help the people. Thanks.

This is not true! You asked me the solution. I explained it. But you said "I will go to a Vacation, after the vacation I will try to repair, if it will work then I will inform you." I do not want you to inform me. I just want you to give me a vote. It was helpful or not. You do not have to accept my work. But you have to give a vote. For the reason of such people my Premium Expertion is not accepted. So, I always help people but never earn money. Please give a possitive vote.

Canon Powershot SI screen goes black after taking a photo

That sounds like a sticky lens shutter. They usually have to be replaced, as they usually will need parts. When the camera is working look inside the lens and take a picture(with flash turned off). You should see a black shutter door clicking shut in the lens. When the camera acts up, look inside the lens again. If the door is staying shut full time, that is your problem.

Does the menu show up on the screen, or is it totally black?
Does the camera take pictures and behaves as normal (apart from black screen ;)?

If the menu shows up then I'm afraid it's most probably something serious- like dead CCD or failed shutter (probably the latter-LX2s are not famous for failing CCDs). Failed shutter is easy to identify. You would normally hear a faint mechanical"click" when taking a picture (make sure you disable sounds in your camera). If you can't hear anything then the shutter might be dead. In cases like this I normally suggest getting a donor camera from ebay and replacing the lens (the shutter assembly is inside the lens but it's much easier to replace the whole lens).
Good luck,

Camera is black

Have you tried opening the camera's lens protector? I know it sounds silly, but it took me a while to figure out... Turn the Silver ring (with 3 dots) clockwise to open the protector, turn it counter-clockwise to close it. Keep it shut when not in use to protect the lens.

Did that help?

Camera was dropped, lens will not retract, when on/off button is pressed the initial screen and sound appear but then the camera makes a kind of warning sound and E18 appears in the lower left hand co

Perhaps the lens got bumped (if the camera was one when it was dropped) and is out of place. Mine did the same and I sent it in (it was within warranty) and Canon fixed it.
