Question about Cell Phones

I have a Samsung a790 with Verizon service. In certain areas (e.g., Morristown, TN; Cincinatti, OH) when I dial a number with 4 bar signal strength, after a few seconds the signal strength progressively drops to 0 bars and I get the notice "signal faded, call was lost". After ending that call the signal strength goes back to 4 bars. I have updated my programming and roaming. I have shut it down and removed the battery. I have this problem but others standing next to me (on Verizon) have no problems connecting.

HI,

There are few troubleshooting steps you can try:
1)reset your cell phone by following the steps mentioned in the user manual which was provided with your phone.

2)Does this happen while you are stationary or driving? If while
driving it's possible you've pulled up beside a large building or
truck that may be temporarily blocking the signal.

Another thing you can try is putting your phone's roam setting on
any other option rather than Automatic so it won't attempt to roam when the signal becomes weak. I've found that this reduces dropped calls when I know I'm not going to be leaving a Sprint service area.

    your phone sees a
    strong signal from one tower but then it decides to switch to a more
    distant tower with a weaker signal. Could also be a tower handoff
    problem. One tower doesn't have the other tower in it's neighbor list
    to handoff to so it drops the call instead. All very common problems
    on CDMA networks.
    You should consider switching to a superior carrier, friend.

I've read about this type of thing... Your phone uses CDMA as a technology. The US is much better known for GSM technology. CDMA is prone to drop-outs due to volume (ie: lots of people on the phone at the same time). Forget about tech support ever admitting to this. I've heard that for the CDMA technology, your drop-out rate will be noticeably different depending on what model of samsung phone you use.

The other people standing next to you are probably using a different model of Samsung phone or they're using a Nokia, which for some reason handles CDMA more successfully.

I know this probably didn't provide you with a solution... well maybe take note of the models of cell phones that seem to work better and consider switching cell phones. I hope this helps some. Good luck.

How to boost cell signal when service is poor


If your cell signal is going down especially in an area you normally have good service in or if you never turn your phone off with cdma technology( verizon, alltel, tracfone, ...no sim card) if you dial *228 from your cell hit send like making a cal and press option 2 it will update the phones signal and roaming capability and any new updates that your phone may not received due to bad area travel or not powering the phone on and off. It usally increases by one to two bars and if you are unable to get it to go through drive into town near any verizon wireless store they all have cell towers near them and try again. this can be done any time any where there is cell service within the continental u.s. and I do it if I travel from my home to the town 30 miles away because the signal changes so dramatically between towns. just a tip if your bars are dwindling away to nowhere.

Make sure you have at least two bars of signal strength before attempting calls or data transfer. You may have to sit near a window.

You responded that you have 3-4 bars of signal. I suggest you visit your carrier's place of business (AT&T, Verizon, etc.). Demonstrate the problem to the representative there.

I had same prob - after buying an LG Smartphone (SP) to replace my Samsung Mantra flip phone (FP), signal strength was so low that i couldn't use it except as a pc on wifi, so i had the FP reactivated. After ~ 6 mos sprint upgraded the tower and i had the SP reactivated. Now i get 1-4 bars, but if only 1-2 bars voice is sometimes nearly unintelligible... You CAN buy a signal booster and use it in your residence but the cost is hundreds of $. Or you can do research and try to find a SP which has high signal sensitivity. The Samsung Mantra FP has very good signal sensitivity and worked fine even before sprint upgraded the tower... the LG SP has much less inherent signal sensitivity and so needs a stronger signal to function. But there's more to the story...

If you have home WiFi you can switch to T-Mobile and use their WiFi option with your SP to send and receive cell calls via WiFi when your SP WiFi is enabled & connected. I suspect this is what I'll do myself when I get tired of the poor voice quality my sprint LG SP is now delivering. And my guess is that the WiFi option will be offered by all carriers evenually. T-Mobil is just ahead of the curve... IMO.

When i turned on my Verizon Samsung Alias 2 today it told me CDMA not available. I have never had a problem like this before.


Remove the battery from the phone and leave it out for about 30 seconds. This should reboot your phone and may help.

If that doesn't help, try reprogramming your phone by dialing *228 and choosing option #1.

If you really don't have a signal, this call will not go through. It is possible that the tower in your area is down, or that the phone has a serious malfunction. Your next step will be to call Verizon tech support and have them look into it. Since you are calling from a different phone, they will be able to do advanced troubleshooting with you. To reach them, just dial the 1-800 number on the Verizon website and then choose option 3.

My LG Ally phone will carry a wifi signal & has internet access. It will not make normal phone calls & my 3G icon will not return to my status bar. Any help would be appreciated.


Try reprogramming your phone by dialing *228 and selecting option 1. If this call does not go through, your phone either has a broken radio (which I do not believe you can replace, you would need to start the warranty replacement procedure with Verizon), or you are in an area with very weak to no signal.

Try the process again in an area with stronger signal, and if it works, dial *228 and select option 2 to update your PRL (list of towers), then try again in the original location to see if the updated list helps your phone find a tower.

If you find that your phone is getting signal in other areas, but not a specific place that it used to, you should call Verizon from another phone and pick option 3. Their tech support can do advanced troubleshooting with you to find any potential problems with the network, and they can file a trouble ticket if there is a problem with the tower in your area.

I live in a rural area and can't get a signal


That is a common problem. I have had that issue myself. Motorola's pull a better signal in a rural area than LG. I would see if you can do a return exchange for another like phone that is a Motorola. It's the way the phones are made that makes the signal strength different.

if you can still dial someone, but can`t receive anything, try dial ##002# , then ask someone to call you. for the txt verify the sms center number, if you don`t know it call customer service
