If all other touchpad functions work, then my guess is that the left click key is broken. The only thing that "random key pressing" might do on a laptop is to activate the touchpad disable in which case NONE of the touchpad functions would work.
Have you tried opening the laptop up again to see if perhaps the contacts under the left-click button were misaligned or something? To me, the easiest way (meaning not opening up the laptop again) is to just double-tap on the touchpad to left-click, or just get a cheap wireless mouse.
