Can't find replacement needles for Elna 1500 sewing machine - the Schmetz Universal 130/705H needles do not fit my machine

Your owner's manual should tell you what type needles your machine uses. According to this site, 130/705 needles will work with your machine, are also very common, and are available in several brands: Schmetz, Janome, Organ, etc.

In addition, you will need to determine the needle sizes (60/8 through 120/19) as well as the needle point (universal, ball-point, sharp/microtex, top stitch, embroidery, leather...) so the needle is compatible with the thread and fabric you are stitching.

Be sure to change the needles frequently. A needle should be replaced about every 8 hours of sewing time. Sewists tend to skimp in this regard (although needles are the least expensive fix!), but the needle is the most frequent cause of sewing machine issues. If so, you can purchase this size from most any fabric, sewing repair shops, or online vendors. There are many manufacturers who make needles, ie Schmetz, Organ, Klasse, as well as Singer. Schmetz is readily available most places in the US. (IMHO, Singer needles are made more specifically for Singer sewing machines and may not work as well on a non-Singer machine. Most Singer machine manuals recommend using only Singer needles and some sewists have experienced problems when using a different brand.) You may have to experiment with brands if you have any problems with a specific manufacturer brand.

However, there is much more to choosing needles for your machine than the size and brand. The most important choices are to choose needles that suit the thread & fabric you will be sewing. Be sure to read up on the needle types (from smallest 65/9 to heavier 110/18) and the design/shape that will work best for you, ie sharps (for woven fabric) or ball-point (for knits), quilting, topstitch, embroidery, microtex, stretch, denim, universal, leather, etc.

I use schmetz universal needles on all my sewing machines and my serger. always use the right needle for the fabric being sewed.

I suggest using a schmetz universal needles,, using a needle from
a different machine isn't always a good idea unless it's a universal
one---and the correct one for the fabric being sewed

Hello dear! This specific machine recommends regular 90/14 needles, although it would fit 75/11 as well. These are the standard needle and can be purchased at an sewing, fabric or craft store, as well as even a larger store like wal-mart or meijer. (sewing aisle, usually in the middle of the store). If you are sewing a woven, non-stretch fabric, choose the UNIVERSAL needles that come in the red package, if you are sewing on knit or stretch material, choose BALLPOINT (or "stretch") needles that come in the yellow package. Personally, I use schmetz needles. A little more, but way better. Get to stichin! ;)
