The nut is reverse thread - go clockwise to get it off.
It is even easier to get it off with an air tool. Any mechanic shop will pull it for FREE - just be sure to clean the thing up - pop into most garages - like perhaps even who does your oil changes. It is an easy off - on - just remember it is opposite thread so that the nuts tightens by gravity while in use so the blade or spool doesn't fly off and kill someone.
Best of it.

I am trying to change the string on a Craftsman Weed Trimmer

Usually you "Push in" as you turn them. Or...there is a knob with a male thread shaft screwed into place holding it all tight. Hold the spool steady as you try to turn the knob off. Or...there is simply a "nut" to take off. But for the most part the newer wacker spools usually just "push in and turn/twist" out. Simple. to reinstall it or replace it with a new one simply push and twist it the opposite removal direction. FYI most lines can be manually "rewound/refilled" by yourself and reused over and over until they really wear out. There are little tricks to doing a rewinding but it isn't anywhere near difficult to do...or learn. Usually the price of a replacement spool is 5 times the cost of rewinding them yourself. Comon its easy! If ya want I'll help ya thru it.

Wind string on Spool

Most weedeaters have an arrow on the spool. Look at both ends, you'll probably find the arrow. Put your line into the hole and wind the line in the direction of the arrow until you have enough loaded.

I have a Toro 12 inch Toro Electric trimmer and I can't get the spool off to change. Any solution?

I am having the same problem - the spool should just come off by turning it counter-clockwise but is completely stuck. This model does not have any tabs that need to be pushed in to get the spool off. Very frustrating!

I have an 11" Toro trimmer and was having trouble deciphering the symbols on the base. The key is having a method to gain some opposing force to unscrew the cap that holds the spool. I have an oil filter wrench called the round wrench. It is a steel bar with an attached length of rubber belt that can tighten around cylindrical objects. I used that to oppose the unlock direction on the trimmer and "voila", no tabs to push no trick with the button, you just need o_1089.jpg_1088.jpg_1087.jpgpposing force.

Cannot undo the string compartment to put new string in. There may still be string in the compartment but I cannot get into it. This is a 12 inch Toro electric wacker.

There sould be a knob that turns counterclockwise to take spool off. If not there sould be two taps that push in and pull down on what they call the spool head. Hopefully this will help you.

I have a Toro 12" electric weed eater and the line needs changed. Both of my brothers, my brother in law and my son have tried to get the bottom off (where the line goes) but it will not move. They tried...

If the knob on the spool has two small rectangular slots on opposite sides, try inserting screwdrivers in each one at the same time and then turn the spool slightly. This might allow it to pop off.

Replace pull cord on ryobi model cs30 weed wacker

Good fix, mrfixit-jerr! Also, if you remove the rear cover (4 screws) you can stabilize the crankshaft by inserting a screwdriver between the lobe of the shaft and the counterweight.

Double spool on Weed Wacker

This isn't a solution to the problem. However, I think you should talk to someone at Home Depot or Lowes or wherever you bought the model, and see if the string is in there correctly; if it is, then u'r weed wacker must have some other mechanical problem. Sometimes it is just best to buy a new one. The more expensive models are the best.
