Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console
Does the light flash red, or does it turn off completely?
If it flashes red, you've got an overheating problem. You either need to send it in to Sony, or a third party repair place.
If it turns off completely, you need a new power supply which you can attempt to repair yourself (they cost $30-$40 online) or again, send it in.

SOURCE: playstation three power problem
This is probably like the "Ring Of Death" that is included also with the Xbox 360. You might need to replace it. Have you been using it over a long period of time?

PS3 has overheated and the thermal compound between the cpu/gpu and heat sync need to be replaced. the gpu and cpu may need to be reflowed as well. Had the same problem and fixed mine. The thermal compound was pretty much gone when i opened up the system. Also dont keep your ps3 on its side leave it flat this will help keep the compound from moving as much.

hello is perhaps an internal problem that has your playstation with the reader, if you still check the warranty with sony, contact them and explain what happens to you, ahh and if you have something put on the power button remove it

have you ever had the playstation taken apart? Maybe you need to replace the Thermal past on the processors. It is due to an overheating problem. I have one right now that does that.

PS3 owners refer to this as the 'Yellow Light of Death' or 'YLOD'. It's quite common. The problem is caused by poor solder joints (due to overheating) on the motherboard and degrading heat sink compound on the fan.
